PEPPER MCGOWAN: Marrow

Pepper McGowan

Marrow

CD permanently out of stock. Sorry!

Pepper McGowan lives in the world of Tom Waits scores and Edward Hopper paintings. Some people don't drink before sundown, and she rarely hits the piano before that time. Sometimes broody, sometimes revealing, very intimate.

notes

This album was originally released in 1998 by a regional label with half the tracks it now features. Pepper didn't want to do this surgery on the album and copyrighted it in it's entirety hoping to be able to release it in the future as it was meant to be with 10 tracks.

Pepper had previously released two albums on cassette that will soon be available on CD BABY in CD form as soon as the finances and the mastering work their way together.

Marrow, however, was recorded mostly without overdubs, though a few tracks were done in people's houses. Solar Flare was recorded in a balmy red wine soaked session beside a harmonium. Why it was never used in the song escapes us now.

False time and Novocain Moon were recorded at Paul Senick's spare room. Burn came along with the rest of the Marrow material at Dark Tree Studios but was deemed "too downer" to make it on Marrow in a general concensus.

Side note: both Senick and Timski are engineers (the Nasa and Bailey Controls kind not the sound kind) in their daily lives.

Now Marrow appears back in its true form for public consumption as it was meant to be. Sincerely I hope you enjoy it.

  • The album title doesn't lie
    author: Alli

RAW (adj.): 1, uncooked. 2, in a natural state or condition, not processed by manufacture. 3, harsh, sharp, or chilly; bleak, as of weather. 4, without covering, as of skin; naked. 5, untried; untrained; inexperienced. 6, crude; rough. Each of those definitions applies a little bit to this album. Marrow contains a rawness unmatched to my ear, yet Pepper's darkly emotional vocals and piano stylings are perhaps at their best on this album. I love it. In fact, I have several copies lying around my apartment because I've gotten every issue of the CD. This is an album for the starkness of autumn and I highly recommend it.

  • Haunting
    author: Nathan

The CD has a raw, underproduced quality that only serves to accuntuate the emotional impact of the music. Sure it doesn't have the slick, clean sound of something mixed in a professional studio, but who needs it. This is what music is meant to be, Emotional, Meaningful, and obviously wrenched from the artist's heart.

The reissue of Marrow is entirely beautiful, if you already have it buy it again the added 3 bonus tracks are probably some of the best Pepper songs I have ever heard. Simply a beautiful album.
