Firefly Burns Brightly

Alt. Country/Rock/Southern Rock is a cross-bred genre that does not take too kindly to strangers. Anything that remotely resembles something straying from the formulaic norm is ostracized, forcing artists to stick to the tried-and-true precept. It’s a sort of musical chauvinism that shuns any extra creativity of a different voice.
But then there’s the flip side to that coin, a place where cats don’t pay much mind to traditions but focus instead on letting it all out as they thumb their collective noses at the institution. Count Peppertown among that group.
Keep in mind the songs on Firefly don’t come across as some alt-rock contemporary doing an album of southern countrified covers; the songs all have a certain ambiance - that singer/songwriter/jamband vibe that sparkles with an obvious nod to varied blues and folk influences, perhaps Uncle Tupelo or Son Volt, or going back even further, Santana and The Allman Brothers Band.
Firefly is pure Americana, but it's driven by crunching guitars, heavy handed blues riffs, aching vocals and preoccupations with bleak Midwestern imagery that is an overall sense of hope born of despair. Stand out songs include the very bluesy Change My Ways, Season Of The Burn, Alone Again and the title track, Firefly. This CD feels like 5 AM heading home, but taking the long way, and is a welcome addition to my collection.
