Album Notes

The Peptides sheepishly release STEREO STEREO – their sophomore album. Ever-resistant to classification, The Peptides take a slight detour from the misty driving-at-dusk atmosphere of I'M A SPY (released in 2007): STEREO STEREO offers up an eclectic batch of original tunes ranging from toe-tapping ditties to retro boppers. Pushing the boundaries of conventional pop, The Peptides experiment with format – as in the waltzy one-man choir of 'Wild Boy' – and even pay hommage to rhythmic eras gone by with an anti-war go-go tryptic. In full form are those signature lush vocal arrangements (the dreamy pairing of his and her voices has been described by some as "sheer heaven"). As for pangful storytelling, The Peptides' lyrics return as restless tourguides through life's endless maze of love, politics, and loss.

Featured already at coverville.com, The Peptides once again render blissfully transformed two unsuspecting covers. Upon hearing The Peptides' treatment of 'Mary's Prayer' – his 80's hit with Brit band Danny Wilson – famed songwriter Gary Clark remarked: "I love it. I have heard many versions of this song and yours is by far the most original and moving. Thank you for putting the love into it. I am blown away."

The Peptides is the quirky art project of singer-songwriter Claude Marquis, featuring seasoned vocalist Pam Kapoor – both based in Gatineau, Québec. Collaborators include Ottawa instrumentalist Stuart Rutherford, renowned studio drummer Phil Robertson, and mixer/producer 'thehipcola' who has worked with such indie sensations as Brad Sucks.
'Stereo Stereo' is also available in cd format at END HITS in Ottawa, Ontario.

HERE'S WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"Not classic Dylan folk, but retro in the way you liked taking acid and enjoying “free love” and wearing platform shoes. I can’t put my finger on it, as my finger is too busy tapping to the music … [theirs is] a unique sound ... maybe they could be 'lounge folk'…"

"... poppy tendencies, heavy on the vocal harmonies and indie moxie, more earnest than Rufus Wainwright, not so much folk as borderline torchsong experimentalists with a background in a capella music ... there's more to this band than just a schtick and a lipstick kiss."

“It’s everything I want to hear in music without sounding like a musical mutt”
(Doug Ralph, host “Do You Hear What I Hear”, CHUO fm)

REVIEWS

Like Beck’s "Odelay", The Peptides have released a masterful, genre-bending sophomore album that throws quirk-folk, noir-pop, party grooves, and bubblegum playfulness into a boiling pot of sonic madness. Canadian songwriter Claude Marquis is at the helm, navigating us through eclectic waters steeped in the sounds of classic records from the past 5 decades. He eventually cascades down a violent waterfall where every conflicting convention collides, but somehow, in the end, manages to steer the boat to safety. It is an exhilarating ride and The Peptides’ lush vocal harmonies, reminiscent of The Beach Boys, Panda Bear, or Kings of Convenience, will lull you back on board time and time again to be tossed about in the currents of clashing influence.
