Through the constant touring in support of their self-titled debut CD, The Perpetrators have aged like a fine whiskey, gaining depth and maturity but losing none of their bite or raw power. This is immediately clear to anybody who listens to their 2005 follow-up, "the gas and the clutch. " Working 99% live off-the-floor, they pull off the daunting task of nailing the primal, and at times barely containable, energy of their live show in the studio. Like a live set, the songs roll raucously though crowd favorite originals like "She Lets Me Know" and "Rollercoaster Love" and tributes to some of their favorite artists, including Hound Dog Taylor, Taj Mahal and Neil Young.

Of course the new release doesn't mean a chance to rest on their laurels. The first few months after it's release see the band opening for Los Lobos at JazzFest Winnipeg and making their debut at the Chicago Blues Festival. There may be no place like home but The Perpetrators are willing to rock the house anywhere anytime people need some good time, high-energy music. "Influenced by Big Sugar, Dick Dale and Hound Dog Taylor, Winnipeg's rockin' blues trio, The Perpetrators, get this party startred on their second album with a raucous cover of Taylor's "55th Street Boogie" and pay tribute to their hometown with a kick-ass cover of Neil Young's "Are You Ready For the Country."
But the real highlight arrives when skin-pounder Scotty Hills stumbles out from behind the kit and steals the mic from singer/guitarist Jason Nowicki for an exceptionally heartfelt and soulful reading of Taj Mahal's "Lovin in My Baby's Eyes." It wouldn't be surprising to hear this one on commercial radio.
Lenny Milne's sparse production captures the raw essence of the Perps' live performance by allowing them to both hang and cut loose. The Perpetrators don't reinvent the wheel but they sure give "the gas and the clutch" a workout." - 3 1/2 stars
