Album Notes

Mind Trip is the debut CD of trumpeter, percussionist and composer Pete Rodriguez, who has played with such music legends as Eddie Palmieri, Bebo Valdez, Celia Cruz, and Tito Puente, including performing on Tito Puente’s Grammy-winning album Mambo Birdland and the soon to be released Brian Lynch/Eddie Palmieri Project.

Mind Trip has received excellent reviews, garnering the attention of, among others, jazz great Kenny Barron, who says the following about Pete’s playing and compositions on Mind Trip:
“He possesses a full rich sound on both trumpet and flugelhorn and his technique is incredible. His articulation is precise.
[But] it is as a composer that his development is even more amazing. The melodies he writes are full of complex and quirky rhythms, making unusual dips and turns. Harmonically, his music tends to stay away from the usual II-V, II-V-I chord progression.
Each of the original compositions, of which there are eight, on this CD is a unique entity unto itself, full of surprises and strange twists and turns. However, one can be assured that Mr. Rodriguez does have a full grasp of the history of the jazz tradition. One need only listen to his reading of Mal Waldron’s beautiful ballad ‘Soul Eyes,’ or Herbie Hancock’s tone poem, ‘Dolphin Dance,’ to hear his respect and love for tradition.
I, for one, look forward to many more musical statements from this evolving young artist.”

Mind Trip was recently selected as one of six finalists (out of over 1100 submissions) to compete in the Independent Music World Series showcase in Chicago on August 17, 2006.

Pete Rodríguez doesn't waste any time exploding out of the blocks on his debut Mind Trip. From the opening notes, this imposing trumpeter with amazing technique is off and running with the speed, agility, and physicality not often seen in a local jazz musician. A New York transplant and son of salsa pioneer Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, he comes with an impressive résumé that includes stints with heavyweights Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, and Tito Puente. That said, this is not a Latin jazz LP, but rather a stylistic mixed bag of mostly original compositions. They alter between scorching, multihorn barn-burners more reminiscent of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers than Johnny Pacheco's trumpet and percussion dynamo, and well-tempered tunes that highlight Rodriguez's expressive, burnished flugelhorn playing. He's currently working on his doctorate in jazz performance at UT, and not surprisingly surrounds himself with faculty compadres: pianist Jeff Hellmer, bassist John Fremgen, drummer Jeremy Brown, and trombonist Ron Westray, also a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Add local saxmen Elias Haslanger, John Mills, and Paul White to the mix, and behold one of the best local jazz discs to come down the pike in quite some time. (3 1/2 out of 4 stars)

Featuring trumpet and flugelhorn player, Peter Rodriguez, who has played with such music legends as Eddie Palmieri, Bebo Valdez, Celia Cruz, and Tito Puente, this straight-ahead, contemporary jazz quartet also shows off some sizzling tenor sax and trombone artistry, driving home hard-swinging originals with a fiery, Latin-bred aggressive bumping tempo. They also kick back with smoldering numbers more suited for lovers and deep-thinkers. With a remarkably free approach, their style and vocabulary is always rich with charm and integrity. Here's one notable album for jazz fans.
