As we all know by now, budgetary allocations to the music education programs of the post-Katrina New Orleans public school system are at an all-time low. In a city renowned for its musical heritage, this state of affairs is incongruous with the spirit that made New Orleans the epicenter of indigenous American music.
Beyond the unprecedented physical damage to the city of New Orleans caused by Katrina, there was even more damage to the musical soul of the City itself. With funding for music education programs already scant, a vital portion of the very soul of New Orleans has found itself in danger.
So, a bunch of Pirates are coming to the aid of New Orleans, once again under the banner of Jean Lafitte….
After speaking with PPNOM Director General Phillip Nitch, Bob Brinkman of ModernBard.org, a web resource dedicated to renaissance festival and pirate music, volunteered to rally Pirate Musicians from around the globe in support of the PPNOM Mission.
Brinkman spread the Word, and Pirate musicians from around the globe donated their music to help the relief effort. In a matter of just a few short weeks, Brinkman had garnered the participation of some of the finest Pirate entertainment on the planet and has now assembled a two-volume compilation CD to benefit the school music programs of New Orleans.
The result of his tireless effort, “Lafitte’s Returnâ€, features music from over twenty-five nationally and internationally known maritime bands and musicians, including Skip Henderson, Tom Lewis, and the Pyrates Royale.
Proceeds from the sale of “Lafitte’s Return†will go directly to the coffers of the PPNOM project, giving a greatly appreciated boost to the PPNOM International Cash Donation Drive.
Says Bob Brinkman, “As musicians, if we can’t take a stand for music, what exactly is the point?â€
Production of the “Lafitte’s Return†two-disc set was underwritten by Pyrate’s Way Magazine
