Album Notes

“Shifting” is the 3rd official release from the Brooklyn based act Phenotract. Building off of the sound that encapsulated “Transient Messages”, “Shifting”, at its core, is very much a synthesized ethereal pop record. Less dance floor focused than the other albums, Phenotract’s trademark sounds are still there, but this time vocals are pushed more to the forefront, and a few songs feature guitar as well. Vocalists Katharine Heller, Niabi Caldwell, Anaben (from the band By Night With Spear), and guitarist Gabriel Dorosz lend their talents this time around. Songs such as the uplifting “Blinded’ combine hazy diaphanous electronics with airy vocals,“Out Of Sequence” dances around an apocalyptic guitar pop sound, and “To Breathe” is a sweet ballad, almost reminiscent of Sigur Ros’s slower moments. “Shifting” tells a story of life’s changes, evolution, and at times our conflicts as human beings, which will leave a lasting impression.
