The leader of this group is saxist/flutist
Charles Compo who I recall from his work with
William Hooker, many moons ago. No doubt you know
loft jazz trumpet hero Ted Daniel, who played a
superb trio here last weekend (8/9/09) and Curtis
Fowlkes longtime trombone hero for the Jazz
Passengers. I can't say that I had heard of the
Phibes before this disc was given to me by Ted
Daniel, but then again I can't think of the last
time I heard a jazz/rock/funk horn like this
since the good old seventies. I was even more
surprised to find that I can still dig this
great, groovy, greasy and slamming stuff. This
band is super-tight, spirited with strong but
short solos from the flute, trombone and electric
guitar. The first tune, "Hard On" really ripped
my head right off and the second song "Bent Up"
is a slow, groovin' funk piece that had me
smiling and swaying with some mighty tasty flute
and strong tenor & trombone solos. I haven't
heard that ancient synth sound in many years as
well but it certainly does fit well with this
music. For "Don't Make None" one of the
guitarists wails away while Charles plays another
amazing flute solo. Here's what interesting about
this disc: this music is tight, spirited,
well-played and well-recorded with crafty
arrangements and consistently inspired solos. It
does sound as if it could've been a long lost
recording from the seventies but you know... who
cares when it is as good as this. A perfect band
for a party and you will also keep
many of those jazz snobs happy since the solos
are so good. Surely, an unexpected delight. -

WHO ARE THESE GUY!?
This was yelled over the blaring speakers pumping out the song "hard on." I shouted back.
THIS IS THE PHIBES!!! P-H-I-B-E-S. I FOUND THEM OFF CD BABY!!!
There was no response from either of us because we all had grins like a men who just committed a crime and got away with it. We listened to the entire song without making a single comment to each other. After the song finished and the smoke cleared we turned down the volume during "bent up" so communication was possible but one could say anything. There are moments where musicians cant properly explain themselves under the pressure of trying to comprehend what music really is, this was one of them. The silence was broken by "you don't understand, who are these guys!?" The poor kid was in musical shock. This question routine went on for a couple more songs until he finally clued into what was happening. We exchanged other songs from various bands and artists that night. Because I brought out the Phibes it got a little jazzy and avant-garde so Zappa, Miles, Jaco and the Secret Chiefs all came out to play. However; over the course of the night the entire Phibes album got played three times. A correct and acceptable statement to remember the first experience of The Phibes is "PHIBES."
I have callused fingers and I listen to music the end. I can't explain perfection yet, 4 out of 5 stars.
