another turn........

with chupacabras, phideauax makes a full on prog cd. this is my favourite of all. no favourite songs, all are great! from the opening organ, the prog flows out and keeps on going, especially the epic title track. it twists and turns and changes like all the 'classic' long prog songs and holds up with all the greats. then not content with just prog, he throws in the 'ruffian sandwhich', some progressive metal! and nails that too. then ends it all off with titan, a fitting closer to a classic peice of work. i just want to say that rich hutchins is a huge factor this time. drumming in the prog style is so important and he takes all the twists and turns and fits it all together....amazing! seeing the title, i searched for the chupacabras on the net and found that it is an elusive creature ("goat sucker") that seems very hard to describe and nail down, kind of like this music.......coincidence?

The title track is quite long - but amazingly never seems to drag. "Okay" and "Titan" are solid songs that definitely needed to be recorded! "Party" and "Fortress of Sand" are lighter pieces in different ways (one for fun and one for dreaming). Although the assortment is diverse and unusual - it works - the remaking of "Ruffian on the Stairs" was disappointing to me due to the cleaning up of the lyrics and mellowing much of the sexual energy - even though the guitars rock. Overall, like all Phideaux albums, it is hard to take it out of the CD player - you want to hear it over and over again and again.

I could gush on and on about how wonderful this CD is, but I'll spare you by simply saying that it's trippy, engrossing, and beautiful! Check out the two-minute Hi-Fi samples above!
