Charley Cross Interviews Phil Brown
in a conference room on a rainy day
in Jimi Hendrix hometown of Seattle, WA
on January 10, 2006 for [the jimi project]
“…. I actually think your voice is in the same tonal range as Jimi's.
You are not trying to sound like him in terms of the guitar playing. You
are doing different arrangements, but...your voice...it's not Jimi
Hendrix' voice but it's got the same melancholies to it...and there's
a darkness to Jimi's voice too & I don't know if that's from playing
the blues or background but-you've got...you've got a darkness in your
sound-the way you approach these songs vocally and I think it...it
works with this material”
”… And, essentially, . . . you …are trying in someway to pay tribute to more than Jimi Hendrix as a songwriter than as a guitarist.”
”… . . as I write about him in my biography of Jimi, …Curtis Mayfield was one of Jimi's greatest influences and I hear more Curtis Mayfield in your record than I do on Jimi's. Jimi was kind of afraid to completely embrace that Curtis Mayfield "smoothness" both in terms of singing and
playing....well....as a biographer, …”
”I think it is important that people don't think that you are simply a
Jimi Hendrix clone..., which we have plenty of. . . . .”
“. . . You don't really look like him & you don't exactly play like him but you also have another long storied career and you've done quite a bit in music and you've got your own original music and an album of your own originals set to come out….”

Hendrix fans - you NEED this CD!

This is without a doubt the best interpretation of Jimi's tunes, period. Phil Brown has given us all a new look into Jimi's music, one which does so without compromising the beauty and wonder that is so much a part of this music, but is often in danger from lesser efforts.
In fact, Brown adds to that beauty - his playing is just great - terrific soloing (he knows the value of a note instead of 20 ...), wonderful chording, and just the right amount of snarl ... His vocals are dead on - no copycat renditions here.
Manic Depression is not to be missed! But then, the rest are equally impressive.
Jimi would be pleased. Buy it!
