Rooted in edgy rock, spiced with pop, and laced with a folk influence. Their multi-faceted lyrics are artistic but honest, and are complemented by an unlikely ensemble that isn't afraid to put a hammered dulcimer and flute in a rock band.

notes

Phileas Fogg is rooted in edgy rock, spiced with pop, and laced with notes of Celtic influence. A curious and unexpected composite of musical styles, with multi-faceted lyrics that are artistic but honest. The band has the layered ensemble feel of Dave Matthews, the rich harmony of Jars of Clay, and the experimental edge of Radiohead.

With a high degree of musicianship, youthful energy, and earnest lyrics, Phileas Fogg has found audiences in all ages. With recurrent themes of discovery and faith, the music particularly appeals those who can be defined as "active listeners"-- people who like to rock out to music that also has deeper, intellectual quality.

Phileas Fogg is composed of eight musicians, who play a combined total of 12 instruments (and counting). The large variety of instruments gives the band flexibility to create a specific mood for any given song; an electic guitar soars with e-bow, the hammered dulcimer and pennywhistle hearken back to Celtic roots, the drums and bass lines give a primal groove, the accordion can make you feel like you're walking the streets of Paris.

An abbreviated version of the band formed in 2001 to audition one of Phil Woodward's songs for a college arts journal... the song made the cut and recording ensued. A few others later came on to complete the ensemble, creating the band's signature sound.

Myron Marston - Electric guitar
Tim Marston - Hammered dulcimer, pennywhistle, guitar

  • "A winsome and wonderful ... smorgasbord of scintillating sounds"
    author: Barry Nothstine - Tollbooth.org

Phileas Fogg is a made up of a fine ensemble of musicians hailing from Washington State that have created a winsome and wonderful easy going progressive folk/rock/Celtic/pop smorgasbord of scintillating sounds that will have you wishing this release was more than an EP of 5 songs (six if you count the hidden “Irish Medley” that wafts in like a gentle breeze at the end of the CD). You will find yourself transported to an everlasting, warm summer day as you enjoy the breezy melodies and harmonies that abound in Sun & Rain. While listening to the Fogg’s EP I found myself reminded of my favorite albums by Neil Young, Jars of Clay, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Caedmon’s Call, America and even a bit of Rich Mullins in the classy “Abstractions and Metaphors”-featuring a dynamite piano/dulcimer/flute backdrop. “Treading Water” is a moody song 10-plus minute song that begins with an acoustic blues hook and ends with a rich electric guitar solo. Sun & Rain is a fine introduction to a group with talent as abundant as the different instruments on the CD. The lyrics are a lush, poetic celebration of life and faith…and the music is the perfect compliment to the mix. The production is bright and tasteful allowing the various instruments to be heard and the music to have breathing space. I am anxious to see what the future will bring for this troop of talented folk.
