Album Notes

When Bach completed The Six Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin in 1720 it was quite a departure in the career of the illustrious Baroque composer. Although he was a master of counterpoint he had written a body of music without piano accompaniment in order to highlight the technical capability of the violin as a solo instrument. However, many years later Robert Schumann was inspired to compose piano accompaniments for each of these solos which resulted in a collaboration among two great German composers who had never actually met one another. This recording features seven movements from that collection of wonderful music.
