There are people who will tell you there’s something to be said about music written without pretension. That stripped down to its core, a song should be as moving with just an acoustic guitar as it is with a full band. And the first time you hear Phil O’Sullivan sing, you’ll know those people were right. Although “Mystery Romance” is his first solo ep, Phil is no stranger to the glare of the lone spotlight. When he was not busy fronting local staples such as The Glass Family and The Nouveau Rich, Phil honed his musical skills by playing numerous solo acoustic shows, adapting his fully-orchestrated songs into intimate, personal statements. Phil has parlayed these experiences as both a front man and the only man into the crafting of his debut, creating a blend of immediacy and grandiosity not heard for what seems like far too long. When it’s released on October 20th, the real mystery about “Mystery Romance” will be why Phil didn’t do it sooner.
