ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Who is The Phonograff?

The Phonograff is Mike Jones (real name folks!). The Phonograff has been DJ for over a decade. The name The Phonograff was given to Mr.Jones by Canadian Hiphop Legend and BSM crew mate Moka Only for the graffiti Phono used to hit up on trains. Originally hailing from Kamloops BC, he has been building in Vancouver for the last 6 years. In 1999, Phonograff released a critically acclaimed mixtape called Train of Thought, selling more then 500 copies hand to hand with no distribution. That mixtape featured tracks from local cats, underground legends and the first journeys into his own musical production. When Phono realized that he was able to cut a living out of making music, his path was forever changed. From that point forward he started to focus on building a sound, through his production and live DJ shows, that would be synonymous with The Phonograff.

Fast Forward to the year 2006 and Phono has finally achieved what he set out for, a sound all his own. When asked what his sound is, Phonograff replies its hiphop, roots reggae, dub, Latin jazz, electronic music fused into huge hiphop beats with heavy bass, warm elements, all the while keeping the turntablism and scratching in the mix. Whoa. From the Bottom Up, is The Phonograffs debut full length album. Featuring 19 tracks wholly produced by Phono, with 16 guest emcees and vocalists filling in the voids where his production let sit. The guests include such Canadian Hiphop heavyweights as Moka Only, Kia Kadiri, JC Subliminal to US Living Legend Luckyiam.PSC. This album also features some of the west coasts sickest underground cats from Edge 1 to Just B to singer songwriter Coco Love Alcorn. Not to be outdone by his musical productions, The Phonograff can hold his own behind the turntables and has opened and/or played with these artists: 50 Cent, Blackalicious, Digable Planets, Kia Kadiri, Living Legends, Zion I, Mike Relm, Jurassic 5, Kirby Dominant, Maestro Fresh Wes, Sixtoo, Mr.Dibbs, Swollen Members plus countless others.

I really felt this release... feel good tunes with a street edge.
From the Bottom Up delivered on the Hiphop vibes. I liked the street feel of What's your life like?, the underground feel of Talent vs. Passion, and the mellow outro. There were a buncha other tracks I felt, actually not to sound like a d rider, but I liked most of this release.. I bought it off their website... oops. Definit worth the dough. Word.

love it - every track is different
This is a great record. Different MCs for the rap tracks, some lounge-y turntable stuff, dub and reggae on some tracks...this record is like the weather in San Francisco. If you don't like what you're feeling, wait five minutes. Squirrel says check it out.
