notes

When you listen to beat mining in dark places, you are really listening to Pi. Every sound, nuance, and word on this cd was born of her own creation. After working in several collaborative situations, Pi finally felt ready to tackle the whole enchilada - and with her usual 'can do' gusto set out to tackle protools and multi-instrumentalism with gusto. It was an unusually difficult birth- not only was Pi learning recording and production, but in the middle of the record she got blindsided by a serious illness called ITP. (See below for more information on ITP).

Most of 2004, Pi spent in and out of the hospital, and when she felt well, working on this record. As a result, beat mining in dark places, juxtaposes serious life questions, and a 'girls just gotta have fun' attitude, with Pi's trademark urban -pop -folk-hop sound. The result is perhaps best summed up by one of Pi's fans:

"Thanks for the performance and great lyrics. I read about your ITP. My wife died of breast cancer in Jan so I have also seen the inside of cancer wards. They are places of heartbreaking despair, wacky optimism and bizarre humor and it shows in your music. Please keep on performing and recording. Music that touches the soul is often tempered by hard times and pain. - Rod, UK.

Get this record, its fun and real all at once, from Pi's heart right to yours.

*ITP Stands for Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
ITP is a rare autoimmune disease, wherein the body begins to attack its own blood platelets, making the patient unable to clot, and therefore susceptible to internal or external bleeding. While ITP is fatal only 3% of the time, there is no known cure for it.

Portions of the sale of this CD are donated to the Platelet Disorder Support Association- for more info, visit

a playfully acoustic party platform. You come away from this CD with a smile in your soul. It's cheaper than actual therapy and a lot more fun.

PI tells a story with her voice. Sing-a-longs are a must with this CD. Learn the lyrics and sing along and I guarantee it will boost your spirit.

  • The most fun you can have this winter.
    author: AH - Singer Magazine

Her crystal-clear voice is flexible and flawless, rising to the call put forth by her lyrics and instrumentation. With great bass lines and interesting beats, Beat Mining in Dark Places is undoubtedly the most fun you can have this winter.

I would recommend that anyone who enjoys singer-songwriter stuff check her out at www.thatcrazychick.com. And if you are into the pop stuff, then look into picking up Beat Mining in Dark Places.

BMiDP has more to its name than a brief listen might show. The songs are well produced and effectively provide a framework for the vocals. More importantly though, the lyrics break harshly from most radio-friendly pop.

Hi, I saw you in San Diego with Enigmatec/Eclectic Guitars last week (and bought your CD). Thanks for the performance and great lyrics. I read about your ITP. My wife died of breast cancer in Jan so I have also seen the inside of cancer wards. They are places of heartbreaking dispair, wacky optimism and bizarre humour and it shows in your music. Please keep on performing and recording. Music that touches the soul is often tempered by hard times and pain. Thanks, Rod.
