You are listening to a compilation of artists from the 5th Annual Pickathon, which occurred on August 22nd and 23rd 2003. The artists included represent a snapshot of what was happening during 2003 in the Portland and Northwest music scene as well as a pinch of roots music from the national scene. This is the forth release in the Pickathon CD series.
The artists on the 2003 Pickathon CD include (in order); Danny Barnes and Tye North, Foghorn Stringband, Little Sue and Lynn Conover, Little Joe, Casey MacGill's Blue 4, El Son Del Pueblo, Otis Taylor, Retta and the Smart Fellas, Kitchen Syncopators, Johnny B Connolly, Dylan Thomas Vance and David Lipkind, Roy Kay Trio, Trashcan Joe, Jack Straw, and Crooked Jades.
Portland has been leading the country in reinvigorating traditional styles of music, and the result varies from something familiar to a sound that is totally new. It's driven by a youth culture that gravitates towards hearing, playing, and dancing to music that is often not popular with the same generation in places where the music actually comes from. On any given night in Portland you can go out and hear the best in Irish, Bluegrass, Country, Swing, Blues, Old-Time, Roots Rock, etc.....
KBOO (90.7) is Portland's community radio station, and every musical group on this CD has a deep appreciation for the role KBOO plays in keeping quality music alive in the media. All profits, including those from the sale of this CD, go directly to benefit KBOO community radio.
The Pickathon takes place each year the weekend before Labor Day. The location of the Pickathon is outside of Portland in a beautiful mountain valley called Horning's Hideout.
