Album Notes
With one foot in the Son Montuno of Eastern Cuba and one foot in the fertile Jazz-Groove scene of Seattle, USA, Picoso brings you their debut studio release, “Vamonos Pal Mole”. Twelve original tunes take you through a musical landscape where the bedrock of tumbao, montuno and clave give rise to unexpected variations. From the dub and reggae flavors of “Ahi Na Mas”, “Mi Changui” and “Mi Receta” to the spooky, trance-inducing title track “Vamonos Pal Mole”, Picoso bends Son Montuno in new directions. Salsa lovers will get their fill of Picoso’s tight rhythms and explosive horn section on “Papa Jardinero”, “Escuchame Mama” and El Tumbador, while those who like things on the slower side will welcome the sexy groove of “Sal A Bailar” and the jazz stylings of “Mari Mari” and “It’s So Strange”. “La Isla” starts out as a pop anthem to the beauty of Puerto Rico and ends up as a hard-swinging guaracha a la Fania Records 1969. “Norte Pal Sur” keeps you guessing too, switching midway through the song from easy-going Son to hard-hitting, horn powered Salsa. From start to finish “Vamonos Pal Mole” fuses the rhythms of Cuba and Puerto Rico with Picoso’s unique musical personality, writing a few new lines in the continuing story of Afro-Cuban music. It is an album that will satisfy the demanding music aficionado, give the groove-junky his rhythm fix and keep the people dancing all at one time.
