Pineross is the brainchild of Kevin Larkin, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose roots tap deeply into the country music of the 1940's and 50's, the lonesome sound of bluegrass, and the grace of Irish melodies. The songs were written about some kind of old West that everybody knew was disappearing, or maybe already gone. A modern day Quixote still living from the desert to the tavern, battling a cactus mistaken for bandits and thieves, never mindful of the freeway traffic. In that vein is the setting of the debut album.

Pineross

I purchased the cd after hearing Pineross at the Taylor Grocery. Kevin's strong rhythm guitar work combined with interseting transitions and compelling melodies drew me in kept my interest. The CD does an amazing job of capturing the same haunting live rhythmic quality. With lyrics that seem right out of a Max Evans novel, and the deep resonance Kevin's voice, the overall mood and effect continues the tradition of great singer-story tellers like Steve Earl, Tom Waits, and Kris Kristofferson.

Poignant !

The eleven-track album reflects a by-gone area with textures and tones drawing from country music from the 40's and 50's along with Irish melodies and some traditional blue grass. The CD is reminiscent of the past yet has clean, modern production. Each instrument is distinct yet part of the bigger picture. Larkin's melodic mountain music paints visual images of the fading west in arrangements that are arresting. "Brown Paper Day" is a slow yet solid tune with various sounds accenting the points of the song. "Dust In The Eyes" overlays guitars with subtle whistling as Kevin sing the story. Kevin Larkin is the real deal, raising the flag for old country with music that is honest and poignant!
