During the golden age of Cuban conjuntos, Leiva sang with such groups as Orquesta Aragón, Mariano Mercerón, Conjunto Caney and Riverside. He was one of the most popular performers of the son montuno genre, known as "el montunero de Cuba." Greatly respected and followed, he composed some of Cuba’s best-known standards, including track one on this disc, Francisco Guayabal. This 2002 release, Soneros De Verdad, made in Cuba and mixed in Germany, showcases a selection of his best-known hits. Joined by special guests, Virginia and Eugenio, both authentic soneros from Eastern Cuba, this is truly a collectors’ album, celebrating the life and the spirit of this beloved man, an immortal voice of Cuba. His memorable smile can be sensed in this music, allowing him to be remembered as the happy old man with a cigar hanging out of his mouth, still thrilling audiences and spreading the joy of son as he did from his early beginnings.
