Sarah Pirtle writes music with extraordinary breadth. Pete Seeger says, "If you want to hear some of the best songs out there today...listen to Sarah Pirtle." For thirty years she has performed for adult audiences as well as families and children. Her website contains not only all song lyrics but extensive background on every song: www.sarahpirtle.com. An active member of the People's Music Network since 1982, Sarah is also the central founder of the Children's Music Network (www.cmnonline.org).
Her best known and most covered songs include, "My Roots Go Down," "Mahogany Tree," "Two Hands Hold the Earth"
and "Walls and Bridges." She began performing in the 1970's with the Folkfire Singers and with Big Mama Poetry Troupe.
She has received nine national awards for her books and recordings. Her young adult novel, An Outbreak of Peace, received the Olive Branch Award for the outstanding book of the year on world peace and earned her an hour-long radio interview with Studs Terkel. Her Masters in Education degree focused upon peace education and she is considered a national expert on using the expressive arts to teach peace, conflict resolution, and respect for diversity. She teaches graduate education courses on how to use music in the classroom through Lesley University.
Her book, Linking Up, has 300 pages of activities and a CD of forty-six songs teaching social skills for PreK-4th grade and was published by Educators for Social Responsibility. She has recorded over 100 original songs, primarily with A Gentle Wind (www.gentlewind.com)where she is famous for lyrics that touch children and adults alike such as in her songs, "Follow the Voice" and "Colors of Earth."
