Album Notes

The Pittsburgh Gospel Lights were formed in 1952 and have been performing regularly since then. The group’s founder, James H. Mosby(Lead), recruited Rayford Dixon (bass), Bill Scott (Baritone), Alfred Wise (Lead) and Jessie Hill (1st Tenor). Other early members include Cleo Brooks (Guitar), Bobby Jones (1st Tenor), Johnny Sims (2nd Tenor), James Stiggers (Guitar), Frank Baker (Bass Guitar), Richard Harris (Guitar), Willie Mitchell (Guitar, Isiah Wilson (Bass Guitar), Eddie DeBruce (Bass), Abraham Humphries (Guitar) and Ray Scott (Drums).

Today the group includes Frank Smith (Lead), Tim Carter (1st Tenor, Lead), Nathaniel (Thunder) Bills (Bass, Lead), Bill Cyrus (Baritone, Drums & Lead), Harry Davis on bass guitar and William Standard on guitar. Last October the Gospel Lights celebrated the group’s 55th anniversary at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in The Hill District of Pittsburgh.

Their sound is rooted in the southern gospel/soul sound of the sixties reminicent of the Peacock Records sound of that era. Their lineup features no less than three world class lead vocalists, and their onstage energy is legendary.

Their new CD “Won’t It Be Grand !”, Their 2nd release for Bonedog Records,” features fifteen tracks of live in the studio the ‘raising the roof’ bluesy gospel soul sound that they do BEST!
