Album Notes

PJ Elliott's Second recording effort "Under The Influence: Drinking Songs Vol. 1" features covers of classic drinking songs ranging from rock to country, blues and folk. The album starts off with Willie Nelson's straightforward "I Gotta Get Drunk" and rolls smoothly into "Thankin' Jose Cuervo", Buddy Craig's ode to Tequila and the hardships of making a living playing taverns.

Other highlights include 2 Grateful Dead covers (Mexicali Blues, Brown Eyed Women), 2 Merle Haggard tunes (I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink, Reasons to Quit), the classic Albert Collins blues tune "I Ain't Drunk", a rousing version of David Allan Coe's "Jack Daniels If You Please", the folk bounce of "Bottle of Wine" written by Tom Paxton and recorded by numerous others.

What would a compilation of drinking songs be without a Jimmy Buffett number? How about the upbeat ode to hangovers "My Head Hurts, MY Feet Stink and I Don't Love Jesus" which has been a staple of PJ's long standing Sunday Night shows at the Bay Street Hotel in Sodus Point, NY.

One of PJ's favorites is Neil Young - included on this CD is the mournful "Old Country Waltz", originally included on Young's American Stars and Bars album, this song tells the tale of easing the pain of a break-up with tequila while "the band plays the old country waltz".

The album is rounded out w/ a snippet of the Budweiser anthem from the seventies "Here Comes The King", Hank Williams Jr's "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound" and Sticks McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee".

Although the album closes with Haggard's "Reasons to Quit", bear in mind that this is Drinking Songs Vol. 1, so if you enjoyed this album, stay tuned for more drinking songs in the future!
