notes

PJ Morton, a native New Orleans, LA, most often describes his music as "feel good music that lyrically tells stories about life and love...music that makes your heart think." This 23-year old musical prodigy is indubitably a "true" seasoned musician who has garnered a reputation for writing and producing warm, heart-felt, and infectious songs that engage the heart. His humble, yet aggressive spirit, along with his prolific musical talents have afforded him with many opportunities to "fall" comfortably into the music industry.

With PJ's background in music, it is no wonder that he has found himself right at home in the music business. Coming from a musical family and being the son of industry veteran Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr., PJ got his start singing in the church. He began to play the piano at the age of eight years old and by the age of 14, he was already writing and producing. His dream of becoming an artist began to take shape while he was in high school.

Although PJ has worked hard and is continuing to persevere to gain stature in the music industry as an independent artist, he is definitely no stranger to the game. PJ can be noted for writing songs for gospel artists such as Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr., Men of Standard, Ted & Sheri, William Murphy, Darwin Hobbs and Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church Mass Choir. Most recently, PJ can be cited for writing for the inspirational and insightful India.Arie. He has also had the honor of touring with well-known and well respected artist Erykah Badu.

PJ is also a member of Freestyle Nation, a band that he founded. This group consisting of four total members has proven to be quite successful, as they have been seen performing in various cities such as New Orleans and Atlanta. Freestyle Nation has had the honor of performing at several high profile events as the New Orleans Jazz Festival.

PJ attributes artists such as Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Sting, Prince, Kim Burrell, James Taylor, Al Green, D'Angelo, and Paul S. Morton Sr. as being the artists who have stirred his soul and motivated him to find his voice in the music arena. With the fusion and combined richness of these great artists being heard in his music, it is no wonder that PJ is beginning to soar in the music industry!

Because of the uniqueness of PJ's music, one cannot place him in one specific category. He says it best by stating... "...Whatever genre you can stick Stevie Wonder or Sting in ....I'll take that!". PJ is destined to be to soul music what Jay Z is to Hip Hop. He has the necessary ingredients it takes to break new ground....to be a trailblazer! Without so much as a second thought, he will raise the bar in the industry! If one had to use one word to describe him, it would be FREE, because he does not worry about much. In his own words..."I just keep moving, because I know that it's not my fight anyway. So, I just do what I do and let God do the rest!!!".

  • I do not have the words for PJ Morton’s “Emotions"
    author: mosaicthump

I have no words for the way that this CD touched my heart; I know you will share my sentiments when you pick it up (hint hint hint).Aptly named, Emotions is a combination of riveting insights into love and sensibility. I commend PJ for realizing that there is a love that exists beyond the fairytale nirvana of bedtime story books. This release should enlighten you to the realities of love’s roller-coaster. This CD will awaken a realization that there is no way you should frivolously end something special over an inevitable and momentary downturn. In your relationship always seek to probe your innermost feelings to keep the frivolity, spontaneity and lust that made you fall head over heals in the first place. “Blah, blah, blah" seems to sum it up best. When you are asked to describe how your lover makes you feel one should never have the appropriate words. It seems to me that this description should always come out “like Jiborish".

  • A Jewel In A Bed of Rocks!
    author: Eric T.

Imagine, India Arie, DeAngelo, Stevie Wonder, Kaki King (Google her!) and (PUT YOUR FAVORITE SONG WRITER HERE - here's one of mine, David Foster) in a studio for 3 months with an engineer like Alvin Speights (Google him if you don’t know!)! Now you have a better idea of quality and depth of this album. This is clearly one of the cleanest productions I've ever heard on an Indy. The lyrics and vocal arrangements on every track are breathtaking and mind blowing! This album shines above and beyond the land of great demos. When you want something different that just make sense, this is the CD you want to reach for. (TWO THUMBS and a Krispy Kream Doughnut!)

  • Quality music with a message
    author: Bobbie

I had never heard of the artist, but heard the song jiborish on one of the many music channels on directv. i immediately went online and ordered the cd the same day. This is one cd where you will listen to in its entirety because every song is great. It's great to hear original music with a message/story that's not about money, women, and cars. I listen to this CD at least 3 times every day, and haven't got bored with it yet.

  • A Beautiful Surprise
    author: Christina Marie

I recently watched this man take the stage in Detroit and he was awe-inspiring! This album is truly beautiful--all encompassing in the essence of soul music. He has become an inspiration to my musical work. This album is truly wonderful. I felt blessed to have met this man and seen his genius at work on the stage. He is one of very few musicians of our time...I know there's so much more to come.

This CD is Fire!!! It is refreshing to hear real music that is about something real. This is a must buy CD!! Don't sleep on this one!!!

  • It like listening to your tears, or expressions.
    author: April Jordan

The music moves your spirit. It renders a comforting feeling to know that we are all tied together by what is sometimes tugging at your heart. Emotions are real, and they somewhat dictate how we flow in life. Thats if you let it. What's so good about this album is it offers a peacefulness to what some people make chaotic. I love it!

  • Essential Listening
    author: SoulTracks

To me, there is little that is more enjoyable than a great album coming out of left field, and we’re lucky if we hear a handful in a given year. Well, there is no bigger sleeper this year than Emotions.  It is a truly great disc and an unexpected introduction to a young singer/songwriter who appears to have the whole package. And while an album like this would be welcomed by soul music fans anytime, during a time in popular music when it is more important to pimp and pose than make real music, it becomes that much more precious. It will be tough to find a better adult soul album in 2005. This is essential listening. [To see entire review, visit http://www.soultracks.com/p_j__morton.htm]

  • Superb debut set from a songwriter with a great future
    author: Roger Williams

This is the debut solo set from the young and definitely upcoming artist out of New Orleans, LA, and a gem it certainly is. P.J. is also a member of the band Freestyle Nation and has written material for luminaries as India Arie, Darwin Hobbs, Men of Standard, Ted & Sherie and has also toured with Erykah Badu, and cites his influences as Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, James Taylor,Al Green and D'Angelo to name a few and those quality influences show in the material on show here. My Superstar with its simple acoustic guitar and horn backing opens the set, followed by strangely-titled but extremely melodic Jiborish (Blah Blah Blah), then we have one of the highlights, the jazzy and beautiful floating I Need To Know, reminiscent of jazzman Roy Hargrove's recent work, absolute quality. The anthemic Fly Away featuring the pure-voiced Anaysha was the one that originally had me hooked whilst listening to the samples on the website and is another indication of P.J.'s obvious talent for writing material of this quality, stunning stuff indeed, but the one for me and the one that I think will find favour with the UK radio DJ's and the UK soul club dancefloors is the absolutely brilliant No Ordinary Love, again reminiscent of the brilliant Roy Hargrove's recent work, this is supreme quality midtempo contemporary soul music, melodic, jazzy, understated and powerful, one of my favourite tracks of 2005 so far. The inspirational I Think I Am Falling is another highlight, with it's slight reggae beat and horn backing showing off P.J.'s writing talent, and the remix of How We Were featuring Freestyle Nation, is a wonderful hip-hop styled and melodic jazzy groove with its prominent electric piano backing, love this! The remainder of the album is pretty much in a downtempo groove, every song it's own right of top quality, lyrically poignant, melodically strong and simply superb listening. As strong a set of real songs as you'll hear this year and an unconditional recommendation from me because P.J. Morton possesses serious talent, he's a great vocalist but on this showing an exceptional song writer.

  • Good melodies, live instrumentation, well thought lyrics, good album
    author: JJ

This album gives you that live, personal sound that's been missing from R&B music today. Outside of a couple of songs, this a good buy for anyone who likes melodic soulful music. Great use of the three string players & the horn player used on this album, R&B needs to embrace that once again, they are very soulful instruments.

  • one truely amazing talent...never heard such meaningful and tasteful music
    author: dchristian jr.

this project defines music. the use of real live instrumentation keeps in line with the pureness of the lyrics. i predict that this cd will touch the hearts of many people, showing that it's okay to love. what happens between the hi and the i do???

  • Amazing! This is what music is all about...Finally no skipping around...
    author: Sophie

I absolutely love this cd....I can listen from the beginning all the way to the end...a classic...and, this is not hype...

  • Excellent
    author: Rick

This is a classic, every track , just put it in and let the whole cd play you will not skip any songs. Great
