Album Notes

PjRichardson is a Liverpool-based producer and songwriter who hails from the UK south west. His work has been variously described as "a cross between Beefheart and Beck" and him a "white-boy beatboxing conundrum". His 2005 LP, 'Kicks+Tricks', is an intelligent collection of reasonings, rhymes, realities and dirty bigbeat rock 'n roll rants.

"From the trip-hop-esque bass-bin-heavy Poker Joker to the bottleneck simplicity of Lady, Kicks+Tricks is a diverse and very honest record. Interweaved with monosynth melodies and valve-processed loops, there is an awkward intensity behind the music; it is a defined and intentional departure from PJ's earlier electro Bristol-tech outings". [Review]

A bonus Flash Movie is also to be found on the CD, with two extra mp3s, interactive slideshow and hidden links, which can be accessed by any PC with a CDROM drive.

PJ is currently working on a new album, due for pensive release in late 2008. It will, of course, be as indie as it gets. No frills, no E additives, no marketing, no A+R quotas; just oak-fermented indie goodness.

PJ's next record is very much ongoing and ephemeral, but if you need sonic sustenance in the meantime, check out his MySpace page for hidden goodies and rare mp3s.

Kicks+Tricks is also now available for a shockingly low price of $9.99.

Dirty, groovy electro-grunge and oodles of creative innovation

Not a million miles from Miss Polly Jean Harvey, this synth orgy begins with a bit too much dentist chair screeching, then turns into a real gem. Dirty, groovy electro-grunge and oodles of creative innovation. As the vocoded Doctor Who shenanigans subside, a gleaming Ben Harper-esque voice comes out to play… I want two choices. A musical enigma that defies description

“Poker Joker” takes off into a vein that echos a shadow of Beck; yet PJ Richardson serves up a plateful of audio flow that permeates with a cerebral & other-wordly vibration, that is in another dimension altogether; in “Mundane”, PJ drives down a harder edged Rock road, replete with electric slide guitar & complimentary analog-retro synthesizer. Reminiscent of Marc Bolan & T. Rex in some aspects; “April Showers” is a ghostly piece that haunts the listener with a psuedo-existential look at post modern society & the isolation & alienation that peers forth from the shadows.

Takes a while, but I get it

When I bought the album, I'd only actually heard Mundane, which was simply cool, dirty, etc. The album surprised me at first - its quite varied, not all big beats as I'd thought. But I gave it time. Now I really like it. PJ's programming work is top notch. His thoughts are smart. And his other tracks not on this CD are worth checking out too, "Kinky Salamandas" comes to mind (it was on his website). Bit longer would be cool, but good work PJ.... Look forward to more....

Gotta love the lo-fi...

This is an excellent CD for anybody wanting to look/sound cooler driving around town in sunglasses on a warm summer day. Great beats on the 'cool' songs, and the music is great for the slower, emotional tunes too. I truly enjoy, though I have to say, I wish it was just a tab bit longer. Hurry out with the next one, PJ!
