We are Placenta and we will eat your children! Well, maybe not but they will need earplugs when they come see us live. We are the San Francisco Bay Area’s hardest rockin’ psychedelic-glam-core band and possibly the greatest psychedelic-glam-core band in the history of western civilization. We are the voice of post-modern motherhood, the storm troopers of anarcho-feminism, and the heroes of intergalactic hyper-dimensional guitar playing. This ain’t no MTV angst filled smarm-o-ramma, we are here to overload you brain and nourish your soul with electric love.
Placenta was conceived at an anti-war protest in 2003 when Glamaflauge and K-Jetset decided to start a band. Many moons and members have phased in and out of the band. Placenta has performed as a sextet and as an intimate threesome. The “Chocolate and Heroin” line-up features Glamaflauge on in-your-face-bass and vocals, Xodik on inter-galactic guitar, Logistix attacking the skins. Logistix has since been substituted with Hashbrowns.
Chocolate and Heroin was recorded at a special time in frantic way. The band felt that it was important to ‘have product’ in time for the upcoming Momaplooza show on May 12th 2006. Placenta was to be filmed performing that show and featured in a documentary. Rumors of Warner Brothers tie-in soundtrack people (the distributors of the film) showing up to check out the band (the bastards flaked, of course).
It was an intense week. The Drums were recorded on a Sunday afternoon by Ricky Lee Robinson at Hypnodisk Studios (we were billed for four hours). The guitars and bass were recorded by Xodik in Resentment Studios Monday and Tuesday nights (Xodik went to his stupid telemarketing job by day). The vocals were recorded over Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings. Glamaflague not only did her stupid day job, but also had to contend with all kinds of crazy single parent family drama. The vocals “Single Mom” and “Rock Star” in particular, were recorded at the edge of emotional breaking points.
By Sunday’s practice (in a studio we are no longer welcome in thanks to the owner’s super Christian bigotry) Placenta had a CD that Xodik had to go back and re-mix again because everyone hated how it sounded. BUT, by Friday’s show the CDs were all re-mixed, printed up, and ready to go.
On June 24th 2006, Placenta played at Dykemarch. This had an estimated crowd of 50,000 lesbians. Dykemarch is part of Pride weekend. Pride Weekend is the biggest annual outdoor event in the bay area. The performance of “Single Mom” was filmed there. “Single Mom” was Placenta’s closing number that day and joining them onstage were four dancers in giant vagina suits. This is one of our proudest moments of 2006, and our first video from “Chocolate and Heroin” (it’s on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhjLUVYsOHU).
We will eat your children, but we love you.
