ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Planet D Nonet present a Rays Of The Sun, their 2nd space-age tribute to the music Sun Ra. A prolific composer, Sun Ra made numerous recordings over the course of many decades & led a band that featured many great jazz improvisors. This recording features the talented Sun Ra Arkesta trumpeter Michael Ray as featured guest. Also accompanying the PD9 were progressive bassist Joel Peterson, and veteran Detroit percussionists Akunda Hollis and Jerry LeDuff. As always, RJ Spangler brings his unit of crack musicians which include PD9 co-leader/trumpeter James O’Donnell, Ken Ferry also on trumpet, Justin Jozwiak on alto sax and flute, Daniel Bennett on tenor sax, Musical Director Joshua James on baritone sax, & bass clarinet, John ‘T-Bone” Paxton on trombone and vocals, and Michael Malis on keyboards. For PD9 leader RJ Spangler, “Rays Of The Sun” was a labor of love.
