Album Notes

The Halifax punk-pop quartet Plumtree was formed in 1993 by Amanda Braden (vocals, guitar), Nina Martin (bass), and sisters Carla and Lynette Gillis (guitar and drums, respectively); all four girls were in their mid-teens at the time. They released several singles and recorded a full-length album, Mass Teen Fainting (the album title was taken from the liner notes of a Bay City Rollers album). Despite their varied musical tastes -- which range from blues and R&B to heavy metal and new wave -- the band's cohesive and decidedly punk sound garnered a music achievement award from Canada's YTV in 1996.

Perfect first effort from Plumtree

"Mass Teen Fainting" is a great debut CD from Plumtree. In many ways, this is my favorite out of their 3 CDs, although it has more of a garage band and punk edge to it than their later albums. The band plays with a lot of energy and, overall, the songs are upbeat, with catchy hooks that will surely be stuck in your head for weeks at a time. There is also some great humor on this release - from snappin' necks, to wishing that classmates would move away, to a girl with a worm collection and her brother's unfortunate fishing trip - this album has it all. Even 10+ years after its release, the album still seems fresh. Easily recommended to almost anyone.
