"American Music for Two Guitars"
New recording from Guitar Duo "Phil Mathieu and Giorgia Cavallaro".
Cd features original compositions of virtuoso turn-of-the-century guitarist William Foden (1860-1947).
A unique opportunity to hear this newly discovered music written for two guitars.
William Foden (1860-1947)
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, St. Louis born guitarist
William Foden was the leading and foremost American guitar virtuoso.
The contributions of this great American guitarist as a composer,
performer and educator have to date, been largely overlooked by an
entire generation of guitarists. It is our hope that by recording the
music of Foden, we will ignite
the interest of the next generation of players to rediscover his works,
program
his music, and give him the long over-due recognition he deserves.

Valuable contribution to neglected repoertoire of vintage American classical gui
author: Robert Wiser
This recording occupies a valuable niche in the collection of any classical guitar enthusiast, exploring the music of William Foden (1860-1947) and Carrie Hayden (1862-1946). Virtually forgotten today, they were among several American teacher/composer/players of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Completely overshadowed by the European and Latin American repertoire, music for the early American guitar is almost impossible to find on disc, so this performance is indeed welcome. The CD features guitar duets by these composers admirably and exhuberantly performed by Phil Mathieu and Giorgia Cavallaro. The music is something of a revelation, technically sophisticated and with a definite American sensibility. Also included are two additional contemporary arrangements by performer Phil Mathieu. Personally, I would have preferred two more rarieties of Foden and Hayden. The juxtaposition of the modern pieces is a little jarring, particularly the concluding rag, which to my ear sounds as if it were played on steel-stringed folk guitars. I would have also appreciated more extensive liner notes. A brief biography of William Foden is included, but there is no information on Carrie Hayden. But these are minor quibbles; I heartily recommend this disc to anyone interested in listening to the classical guitar of bygone vintage Americana.
