Album Notes

What Mike Compton has to say:
"What do you get when you put Scott Gates, Angelica Grim, Victor Skidanenko, Julian Conn Busch and Katie Nakamura together with traditional string band instruments? You get PACIFIC OCEAN BLUEGRASS BAND! Now, I’m not talking about just any bluegrass band, mind you. I’m talking about a group of people who are listening to each other and communicate; who know how to pull tone and play as a group. Nevermind that the oldest persons in the group are a mere 16 years old! If that fact were not known, the music would certainly not give away the you in this group (the combined age of it’s members is only 68!) as they play with much greater understanding and taste than might be expected at first glance.

... Most all the major traditional bluegrass stylists show influence on these youngsters, and there’s a bit of jazz/swing influence too. These songs are played in the voices of the members of PACIFIC OCEAN BLUEGRASS. They play the tunes, not just copy them. Even old standards like “Black Mountain Rag” and “Foggy Mountain Special” sound as if they could have been written recently rather than decades ago.

There is a spirited and intricate interplay ... burning leads or understated and beautifully supportive backup lines. It is all there.

...PACIFIC OCEAN BLUEGRASS is certainly doing their part to ensure a healthy future for string band music with a straightforward and tasteful first effort!"

- MIKE COMPTON - June 2006

I saw the Pacific Ocean Bluegrass Band by chance in Temecula California and was stunned.I have since caught their act twice more. They are a dynamic group of young musicians with a very rooted taste in bluegrass. Scott Gates is without a doubt the best young mandolinistIhave seen in years and he has that natural ease in playing that comes from mastery of the instrument. Angelica Grimm is a powerful young singer who can sing country or bluegrass with equal skill. Scott and Angelica definitely have a chemistry on stage. The Bass player is solid and they have a great banjo player who can really play the banjo so it enriches the music instead of overpowering it. The fiddler is very young and plays well for her age but they also have a fantastic flat picker named Paul who has a beautiful touch. This is a great CD and you will enjoy it as I have. Great Listening

Anything that is connected to Scott Gates seems to shine, but these kids in the band are truly amazing players and singers. Scott has developed into an amazing entertainer on his own with his vocals and his amazing mandolin playing, Angelica has a classic Bluegrass/ Country Voice, Great Reno style Banjo player in Victor Skidanenko, Julian Conn holds the steady driving Bass and little Katie has to be seen to be believed. This is a very strong effort here, done by young musicians that really care for the music they are playing. They know and care about the history of the bluegrass music and it shows on this recording. A must have and strongly recommended
