Canadian Urban Roots Music....

The core members, Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira, joined forces in late 2006 with musician and luthier, Benny Sidelinger. He built several instruments that the
band plays. Po' Girl showcases a variety of instruments, including gutbucket bass (built by Awna), glockenspiel, clarinet, accordion, banjo, dobro, guitar and piano; twelve in all and all members frequently change instruments with each song, playing with a proficiency that can only be achieved by fanatical practice and a gifted ear.

The talented, touring band has two principal singer/songwriters who front the group. Allison Russell from Montreal and Awna Teixeira from Toronto hit the musical road at a tender age and lived to sing their tales. In the last year they have traveled to 13 countries sharing their "echoes of speakeasy jazz, the western lament and the accordion-strapped ghosts of European folk." These musical gypsies recorded their newest album in Austin this past summer and have produced a sound that is better than any previous Po' Girl album to date.

You'll be happy you own this record - it's a gem.

Songs about death, child abuse, road kill, disasters and lost love. Yet all are inspiring, uplifting, and soulful set to very original melodies and creative arrangements which make this CD very special. It ranks with Po'Girl's best, which shows how good it is. Should sell millions. I caught the Po' Girls at their show in Putney, London on 7 June, when I met a lady on a blind date. (Our two combined ages probably exceed the ages of all those on stage!) An excellent show, and a great group who deserve all their success. (And the lady and I are still dating!)

this and the Sofia CD arrived at my door a few hours before leaving on a long road solo trip to the Southwest. there was no better soundtrack to accompany the lonesome desolation of the high desert. striking harmonies, mature and interesting songwriting. very different sound from earlier stuff. fantastic! come back to seattle!

Great vibe, flowing from start to finish. Best music purchase so far this year. Saw them at Hillside last summer and couldn't wait for the album.
