Album Notes

Born in Melbourne, Jennifer was resident in Paris 1980-84 where she trained as an actor and began vocal training. Short stay in London before moving to Cologne in 1985 where she continued vocal training, worked as an actor, singer and voiceover artist, and began writing songs becoming involved in the alternative pop music scene in Europe and connected to Conny’s Studio near Cologne.

In the late 80’s she started playing small percussion instruments: the Berimbao, African shakers ‘Televis’ and various hand drums, relating strongly to the sounds and rhythmic possibilities these instruments provided her as a singer. Since that time the small percussion and vocals has developed into a musical persona at the core of Jennifer’s performing and songwriting.

In 1998 she fell in love with Jamaica and was resident there from 1999 till 2003 working with various Jamaican musicians and singing a range of repertoire which included Jazz and Chanson as well as Jamaican/Caribbean tunes, at the same time always continuing to work on and develop her own songs.

A few months after returning to Melbourne in 2003, Jennifer met Joe Camilleri who was so impressed by what he heard, he decided to produce her album later bringing Ed Bates in as co-producer

“Fugitive Desires” is based on the vocal/percussion core of her work which has also naturally been influenced beneath the surface by her varied cultural pursuits and experiences.

The album has been intuitively and sensitively produced, so that Jennifer Levy’s style is recognisable whether performed completely stripped down to the basis of vocals and percussion or with a complete band.

"Using small percussive instruments, shakers, hand drums,as a rhythmic basis
for her expressive vocals, Jennifer Levy aka PollyGot Riddim brings a unique
quality to her original compositions that draw on pop, reggae, folk, blues, rock,
jazz and world music."

Billy Pinnell, Broadcaster/Writer
