No cock-rock posing, posturing or prancing around. No leather pants or sparkly outfits. No tattoos, nose rings or outrageous haircuts. No attitude and no neatly packaged, marketable "image". Just a bunch of regular guys who love music, love to play music and love to write songs.
Pope Factory truly believes that nobody cares if they like porn, smoke weed or what kind of underwear they prefer; that the substance of their music takes precedence over style or image.
Pope Factory started out three years ago playing for fun; they wrote music that they liked and played it the way they wanted to without regard for trends or even whether or not they would ever get a live gig. Along the way, they developed a rabid following and found that they could carve
their own niche among music fans who appreciated their unique sound and non-conformist approach to music.
They revel in the fact that they cannot be pinned down to a genre and that there is no definable Pope Factory "sound". Pope Factory demands to be
accepted on their own terms and so does their music. Every band that comes along says that they don't sound like anything else out there. Nobody likes to be stamped as a specific style yet the nature of the music business demands it. Instead of trying to give a half-assed description of what Pope Factory is, here's a glimpse of how others have described the band over
the past six months:
Genre: Art-rock, Indie-rock, Progressive Rock, Space-rock, Alternative Rock, Grunge, Heavy Psychedelia, Melodic Pop-Psych, Shoegazer, Brit-pop, Alt-psychedelic Rock, Rock Matrix, Noise-pop, Emo
Sounds Like: Grateful Dead, Syd Barrett, Olivia Tremor Control, Radiohead, Ride, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Swervedriver, Blur,
Teenage Fanclub, June of 44, Robert Fripp, Pink Floyd, Tripping Daisy, Yo La Tengo, early Smashing Pumpkins

REVIEW FROM AIDING & ABETTING MAGAZINE ISSUE 185, JULY 28, 1999 COPYWRITE JON WORLEY 1999 "The strident guitars of emo, the song structures of noise pop and the harmonies of plain old regular pop. Thus Pope Factory reminds me of a lot of bands, but really sounds like none of them. It is the guitar work which really intrigues me. The rhythm section sets it up so nicely, and then the guitars get to work. The vocals are quite nice, but I keep coming back to those cool guitars. Something about the way they weave. The texture of the sound is impeccable. There are discernible layers (often, this effect is enhanced by the slow introduction of instruments in a song) and so part of the fun is tracing the lines through the pieces. I like to do that, anyway. Familiar, and yet unique. A real formula for success (at least on the limited scale of making-no-money indie land). The artistry cannot be denied." REVIEW FROM LUNA KAFE, JULY 28, 1999 COPYWRITE: SHAWN DESPRES ...From the spacey swirling guitars of Channeling Ringo to the upbeat, short instrumental that ends the album this is a strong record... Standout tracks include Smug and the ten minute The Wait which manages to shift between psychedelic and hard rock sounds beautifully. Oh yeah, and for the record, Pope Factory's EP contains some of the coolest and most original album packaging I have ever seen... Keep an eye out for these guys in the new millennium. REVIEW FROM GRAVITY DISTORTS TIME AUGUST 1, 1999 COPYWRITE: ZANE GRANT "If there were cities in space that looked like people in the 50's thought they would, the kids would be wearing bubble helmets and after they took out their David Bowie ("this is ground control to major tom", they would throw in some Pope Factory..."
