This album is, in part, a tribute to the artists who came before. Pres, Bean, the Kid and the Brute, Hamp, Benny, Basie, and the rest. The album is also a forward-looking testament to the new generation who has picked up the torch to carry it for a minute or so before passing it on.
Inspired by Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Ben Webster, Lester Young, and Gene Ammons, PorkPie is a 9-piece ensemble which recreates the "Boss Tenor" sounds of the 50's and 60's. The name Porkpie comes from the round-brimmed hat that many jazz musicians, including Lester Young, wore during that era. Porkpie incorporates top talent from the jazz, swing, and jump-blues genres, combined with the arranging skills of the area's finest arrangers, to create a sound that's unforgettable! The band's sound is part Big Band, part small combo. A blend of new and old is created by mixing original music with classic swing. Porkpie's strong, swinging groove and danceable sound is a favorite among the Pacific Northwest's dedicated community of swing dancers.

A brief step into audio noir that paints a sound of a past generation
author: JavaMan
This CD helps you step into the old clubs of Kansas City of the past. It has the appeal in the title and in the playing of Lester Young and cohorts. Not only on cd but I have heard the group Pork Pie in person. It is a blast to watch and listen. Listen to the sound bytes. Feet will tap, oh yes, feet will tap!
