MARTIN POSEN
is an acoustic guitar instrumentalist from Toronto. He began his professional music career at the age of 21, when he placed as a top 10 finalist at the National Flatpicking Championship in Winfield, Kansas.
For the next decade, he refined his acoustic/electric guitar and mandolin skills, performing across Canada with such bands as Mark Haines and the Zippers, and Black Creek.
Since then, Martin has evolved into an original and creative composer. His passionate music fuses an eclectic mix of influences, and his compositions are played in various open tunings, creating a bright palette of musical colours, textures and great warmth. His playing style features complex fingerpicking, flatpicking, crosspicking and percussive techniques.

Reviews:
"What you hold in your hands is a thing of rare beauty. Brace yourself: Martin's soul dance will leave you dizzy."
- Don Ross
"Triple Heater... is a remarkable collection of fretboard gems....Considering he counts among his influences Michael Hedges, Django Reinhardt, Clarence White, and mandolin/fiddle player Sam Bush, it should come as no surprise to hear the eclectic mix of styles represented on Triple Heater. From the title track's dizzying display of dexterity and harmonics, to the Celtic-tinged "Son of Finlay", and encompassing the beautifully lilting "Jewelled Lights" and the dreamy tranquility of "Spinal Chords" - the only cut featuring Posen on electric guitar - the CD invites you into the sonic world of this original and compelling instrumentalist. A uniquely talented musician to keep an eye on."
- Canadian Musician
"From hot fingerpicking, to flatpicking, his percussive techniques on the guitar are brilliant."
- Tandem Corriere Canadese
"Posen's playing is uncluttered, and his tone is sweet and melodic with ringing, sustained notes."
- Dirty Linen
"Not only is he an excellent and talented player, Posen has a fine musical ear and sense of composition."
- Eye for the Future
"Unlike many flashy players, style, substance and dynamics are all important ingredients not to be ignored by Martin."

In Martin's own words...
(On composing in open tunings):
"When I'm in an open tuning, I'm in uncharted territory; I have no, or few, reference points. So the only tools I have to work with are my naked ear and whatever the driving force is that is inspiring me to write. When I look at the fretboard of a guitar in standard tuning, I see chord shapes and scale patterns. I'm trying to start from a more empty and unknowing place, like an artist with a blank canvas in front of him or her. Second of all,for the quality of sound that I'm after, open tunings are more lush and resonant than standard tuning."
