Album Notes

–its honest, live, groove based passionate music and I commend it to you. It would be a cop out to say that the LP’s sound is prime time BNHs meeting peak time Roy Ayers… but it is. The album’s title track featuring old Roy on vocals and vibes is a corker and so much better than the stuff bbe is currently pushing on the star vibist. Roy gets to sing and/or play on another four cuts and they’ll all satisfy his many fans. The album’s other big attraction is “Love Once More” which features the aforementioned Mel Nixon. It’s a big modern soul groove that if those modern room spinners ever got to hear would hammer it as some kind of esoteric soul specialty. It’s wonderful. The rest of the album offers lithe vocals from Judy la Rose and a brace of committed instrumentals. They add to the album’s variety and, as I said way up top, I really do commend this to your soul ears.

‘Love Not Truth’ by Post Modern Jazz is a delight not only for those of us who hark back to the funky and non synthesized days of past decades but for everyone who has even just an ounce of soul in them. For full review see www.soothjazzvibes.com

Brand New Heavies co-founder member Jim Wellman's swansong to music. Jim co wrote the Heavies first Album and in particular the tune Stay This Way .

This is big band Jazz funk at its best and most accessible. Featuring three different lead vocalists including Roy Ayers and numerous accomplished soloists, the album lyrically essays on postmodernism, altruism, language and love. Great song writing is combined with excellent soloing, and the grooves and production are of high quality throughout.
The postmodernism of the project is reflected lyrically and in complex arrangements giving simultaneous voice to many riffs rhythms and harmonies. (There are no harpsichord solos over broken beat castanets here!) With Jim’s background in live big band funk each song has been developed from an original bass groove, and layered with original integrated orchestration avoiding the easy route of building stock tabs and samples prevalent today in R&B / Dance music.
Sample based music technology has changed the expectations of the record buyer so whether there is still a market for a more traditional groove music remains to be seen. One thing is certain, there will not be many more independent RnB albums made like this, it’s just not cost effective.

There is a superb promo video of the title track ‘Love Not Truth’ on the website www.postmodernjazz.com featuring an animated story mixed with Roy Ayers singing and his incredible soloing on the vibraphone.( wait until the second vibes solo to see him really get going).

It is always a thrill to hear and see Roy Ayers perform. The man is a living legend by now, and still hitting the stage left, right and center. I was fortunate enough to see him perform a dozen times by now. Both in Holland and at Ronnie Scotts in London. If you ever have the chance to see him live Please do !! Now the CD: Although this CD carries a number of songs that I think are not worth releasing, it is worth those few tunes with Mr Roy behind the vibes. In fact if you check the website you can even see him perform one of the tracks on the CD in an hilarious video clip, where Roy plays live vibes in a sort of living room :-) Not exactly the most intellectual well produced CD ever - but simply a Cool CD, with some nice summer 'vibes'
