New York City’s PRANKSTAR combines ingredients of funk, pop, electric blues, reggae and rock, marrying the pulse of the urban Northeast with the grit of southern honky-tonks to create a unique and infectious sound. The music has been described by the Village Voice as "a toughened-up Dave Matthews Band", but whatever the comparison, the music is invariably described as funky.
PRANKSTAR is an unlikely combination of a stellar guitar duo educated on the Oklahoma BBQ scene, a vocalist/bassist with pop and funk leanings, a jazz-trained keyboard player, and a versatile and energetic drummer discovered while playing greek party music.
While climbing the ladder of New York clubs, PRANKSTAR recorded their debut album, ONE, which showcases the band's accomplished musicianship against, as one reviewer put it, a "vocal vibe that's as cool as menthol smoke." Splendidezine.com says "it's the soft murmur against a tide of funky instrumentals that makes One stand out, recalling…eerie sexuality"
With the completion of the album, PRANKSTAR faced new challenges - half of the band's guitar strength shipped off to Baghdad, and the original drummer decamped to LA.
Rather than foundering, the band comes back with the addition of a great new keyboard player and drummer, and both guitars blazing on RUE DE BLACKWELL, a followup that further focuses the overall sound of the band while branching out into new musical territory.

Infectiously fuses an urban, funky pulse with roadhouse grit

A tremendous debut album! A refreshingly different mix of influences produce a trademark sound.
It's difficult to find new music that sticks with you, and many of these tracks linger long after their initial impact. A backbone of instrumental prowess lays a professional and "in the pocket" foundation for vocals that are by turns haunting, aggressive, funky, soulful and jazzy -- and just as accomplished as the instruments. "One" is an antidote to the glut of mediocre music flooding record stores, clubs and the Web.
