Album Notes

Presbybop Music is pleased to announce the first DVD release by Bill Carter and the Presbybop Quintet.

"Listening for Selah - Psalms Without Words Live" features a complete set from the 2008 Scranton Jazz Festival, with full performances of eight tunes. Recorded live in concert on August 3, 2008, the outstanding band includes pianist and composer Bill Carter, Jeff Stockham on trumpet and French horn, Michael Carbone on saxophones, Tony Marino on bass, and Tom Whaley on drums.

The concert was presented in a "lessons and carols" format, with Chris Norton of WVIA-FM providing the narration. After each reading of a biblical psalm, the band interpreted the ancient text with a creative new jazz composition. The band is in top form, and the whole presentation is very compelling.

As a special treat, the DVD includes a homemade documentary on "The Making of Psalms Without Words." Working with videographer Paul Flynn, Bill put together some footage from the 2006 sabbatical that prompted this music, as well as scenes from rehearsals and recordings, and interviews with the musicians. It is an insightful introduction to the whole "Psalms Without Words" recording project, which produced a double CD that is also available on CD Baby.

Another bonus track is a solo piano version of "Kristallnacht," one of Bill's compositions for the project.
