Welcome to PRESENT TENSE Jazz!!
So what is OUR jazz? It is original, adult contemporary instrumental jazz with unique compositions written to be memorable, musical, accessible and exciting to listen to. The tunes are also "organic" & "theatrical," and are highly improvisational especially in live performances where our trio (often with special guests) can "stretch out" and experiment "on the fly."
PRESENT TENSE Jazz gets you groovin' and keeps "bringing you back home!"
All of the composition are penned by Richard Frank (acoustic bass)and Ronnie Kaufman (drums/percussion). On this debut CD "Night Shadows," we are proud to be accompanied by pianists John Enrico Douglas (tracks 1 - 5) and Chad Edwards (tracks 6 - 12).
All of the main tracks were recorded LIVE in the studio - damn few over dubs. So what you hear is a tight sound that's polished but also a live interaction - not layered to a drum machine! For texture, we added a few layers of percussion and just a tad of synth patches to fill it in hear and there.
Having a notable career with the GAP Band, Ronnie has established himself as one of today's most accomplished and talented drummers. With a strong background in jazz in combination with his solid R&B roots, his grooves and feel is always present. Richard's background of classical, jazz, 70's rock, and world musics give the group a solid bottom both rhythmically and harmonically. Seeing the acoustic bass as having a much "bigger bottom," the instrument is that added difference in achieving a unique contemporary & accessible sound the band sought to achieve.
We guarantee all our CD's. If you ever have a problem let us know. And please be sure to listen to our samples!

Excellent from A to Z
author: LaurentHad the chance to see PT at LaVe Lee in LA back in 2003. The guys are great fun live and this studio album carries the energy they display on stage. The music is somewhere between straight-ahead jazz and contemporary jazz. Without reinventing the wheel, PT manages to offer a different and fresh approach to jazz. Highly recommended ! And go see them live if you can !
Another proof some of the best music is released independent
author: Harry SpeltWhen I heard the samples they sounded fine and I decided to order the cd. When I heard the cd in full it turns out that this is not just a fine cd, it is a great cd ! A collection of well balanced, melodic compositions played by outstanding musicians. If you are into contemporary/smooth jazz you have to check it out and you won't be disappointed.
IF YOU LIKE JAZZZZZ AND YOU DON'T OWN THIS GROUP U NUTZZ!
author: StockTec1@aol.com AKA L.D. WallI was fortunate to have heard this group play live at the Lucy Florence Coffee House in Lemert Park, Cali. Jazz inspirations plus Latin rythms meet head on in this original quartets's driving debut CD release on the track, "Dia Del Sol." This is one of the most refreshing group of artists to emerge on the jazz scene in a while. The collaboration of Richard and Ronnie on "The Approach" is masterful. These all original tracks hightened my already keen sense for accoustic candy. The rythem section was impecably maintained on Ludwig drums and percussion by Ronnie. WOW! If you love keyboards none does it better than John on a 1928 Steinway! I close my eyes in my listening room and I am taken back to that night at Lucy's. I might as well give these guys a permanent debit card for any music they produce. They said to keep it short... how can I? The moment I got home I was compelled to see others reaction to this music so I featured it on PALTALK on the internet. They all asked where they can get it so I gave them this site URL! I want my commission Ronnie! Bottom line... OWN THIS OR REGRET IT!!!
