As post-punk strut and posturing becomes more and more of a marketable commodity amongst indie rock's most fortunate sons, true innovation falls to the hands of those who flourish in the outskirts. Somewhere between Boston and Atlanta, the Press has been quietly at work crafting a buoyant and artfully-unfastened pop cadence. Drawing comparisons to everyone from the Fall to Modest Mouse, Pavement to the Pixies, the group churns out a plodding dirge driven by complex and nerd-damaged vocal melodies and swaggering aural unease.
Since coming together in the Fall of 2002 while attending college in Boston, Michael Henry (guitar/vocals, drums) Dave Schneider (guitar/vocals, drums) and John Walsh (vocal, guitar, bass) have delved into a cacophonous cerebral swirl running through themes of sex, love, confusion and all points between, while remaining free of any and all sentimental sniveling.
Now with its feet planted firmly in Atlanta, the group's gauche and peculiar pop tones culminate with its Noxious Saucy Beast EP, released this Spring on Goodnight Records.
Fashioned by the slick production hands of Will Loftin at Shangri La studios, Noxious Saucy Beast oozes with an amalgamation of otherworldly rock, punk, and alternative influences. "With One Hand" unfolds with a sinister and searing sonic stew made of equal parts the Birthday Party and the Talking Heads while the albums opener "Three Point Three" is carried by straightforward guitar lines and stiff-legged tendencies. "Fattest Pigeon" is a rolling and overcast number that simmers with restless melancholy and reflection. Sharing alternating vocal duties all three members exhale with the fortitude and distress of a lifetime of influences where everyone from Ian Curtis to Kurt Cobain step in and out of the fray with a ghostly guiding light from beyond. Catch the Press before the Noxious Saucy Beast carries them away.
Debut EP on Goodnight Records April 26th 2005.
