The Primary 5 are from Bellshill, Scotland and started out as a solo project by Paul Quinn from Teenage Fanclub. This classic pop debut record has been released in the UK and has already received favorable reviews and comparisons including the Byrds, Teenage Fanclub, with hints of Buffalo Springfield, the Pernice Brothers, the Hollies, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, Rick Nelson and Nick Lowe. The recording process was helped along by Norman Blake from Teenage Fanclub, Nick Brine (mixing credits for Oasis, the Stone Roses, Ash and Teenage Fanclub) and Paul McGuigan from Oasis.
Paul Quinn played with Teenage Fanclub during Grand Prix, Songs From Northern Britain, Howdy and Words of Wisdom and Hope (a collaboration with Jad Fair). He has also drummed for Alex Chilton, and Frank Black's Peel session. The Primary 5 recently had the opening slot for Love's UK tour.
Press quotes:
"...Paul Quinn delivers a stunning solo debut with North Pole"
-Matt Collar, All Music Guide
"...an album full to the brim with classic West Coast pop..."
-Leslie McIvor, Bellshill Speaker
"There is no doubt that Paul knows from experience what a good live band should sound like, and that's what The Primary 5 are, a well rehearsed, tight unit with jangling guitars and keyboards, who won over the mature audience with ease in less than half an hour. Legends in the making? I for one wouldn't be surprised."
-Barry Jones, Americana UK live review of their opening slot for Love
"With a voice unnervingly like Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, Paul's come up with a top collection of songs that would do Crosby, Stills and Nash, REM or Big Star proud and (probably, they wish) sit nicely on Teenage Fanclub's own set list."
-Alan Wilson, Grapevine
"...sun drenched guitar pop occasionally cut through by feedback, a bit like Crazy Horse covering the Byrds."
-Roddy Isles, The Dundee Courier
"From the first few bars of Comin' Home you'll be intrigued and hooked by the sound. And by the closing bars of Field of Dreams you'll be hitting the repeat button and listening again. Melodies burn their way into your brain without effort and if you give this album a chance you'll wonder how you ever lived without them."
