Prime Cut Band



Prime Cut Band is a contemporary jazz/R&B group that plays a variety of styles of music from Country to Reggae.

Prime Cut has four members: Don Van on bass, Andre’ Holman on drums, Audie Smith on keyboards and Vicki Newsum on vocals.

Don Van is a product of a musical family. His parents, Don and Joan Van were prominent musicians around Memphis and all over the world. Don has played with several groups as lead guitarists and vocalist and bassist. Some of the groups he has performed with include Joyce Cobb and the Cool Heat, J.A.M.B. and spare parts.

Andre’ Holman has performed with Ruby Wilson, Marlin Branch and Monday’s Child and Joyce Cobb.

Audie Smith is known for playing at his parent’s restaurant, Marmalade Restaurant, as well as Folks Folly and the French Quarter. Audie also spent 6 years performing around New York with local acts, opening for performers such as Roy Ayers and the Main Ingredients. In Memphis, Audie has backed performers like Denise LaSalle and J. Black Foot.

Vicki Newsum has worked with well known artists like Kirk Whalum, The Late Great Richard Groove Holmes and Carlos Garnett. Vicki Newsum spent 20 years as a New York artist and has recently returned to Memphis.

The warm and subdued opening notes of Audie Smith’s piano impressed me immediately. I casually drank in the essence of the music. This persisted throughout this well-produced album of mellow jazz with a lot of flavor. Prime Cut, you may take a bow.
