Album Notes

A distinctive, memorable and mercurial mix of rock, modern folk and blues.

Project Mercury serves up ethereal harmonies, haunting violin, evocative guitar and piano. Their first CD, Light This Candle, showcases just what happens when a singer-songwriter comes of age during the reign of classic rock.

Light This Candle whispers, winks and wails, as it takes listeners on a musical journey, with a "space ballad" a la Bowie's Space Oddity... a Kashmir-esque Middle-Eastern epic...and pop at its catchiest. All are united by Project Mercury's signature hooks and intelligent, deeply felt lyrics.

The songs take listeners to unexpected places too, like the launchpad of an astronaut awaiting first flight in the title track...the home of a woman held captive by a known serial killer in Please Don't...and a beloved amusement park in At Palisades.

For fans of Queen, 70's Elton John, Tori Amos, R.E.M., Jewel, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann, Led Zeppelin, Heather Nova, Travis, Pretenders, Sinead O'Connor, Fiona Apple.

REVIEWS

an album to which you will return often...very highly recommended.
author: Bryan Baker
The press release states that Light This Candle "...showcases just what happens when a singer-songwriter comes of age during the reign of classic rock." Project Mercury takes some cues from Heart and Led Zeppelin. Their music is decidedly acoustic with bent for progressive directions where elements of Kashmir rise. But Light This Candle is multifaceted, both lyrically and musically. While the music ranges from acoustic rock to sultry blues Project Mercury cuts a clear direction and with solid character. Charlene Donohue's vocals explore harmonies in unexpected places that deepen these songs along with her beautiful violin. Several of Marian Mastrorilli's songs are filled with images of childhood innocence, while she just as easily conjures up visual sexual playfulness and, later, dark violent scars. The title cut shows a unique look at her introduction to astronomy as a 9-year-old and an excitement for space travel; which sounds like a strange topic for a rock song, but in Mastrorilli's hands it's characteristically pure and simply captures the joy of discovery and wanderlust, while, perhaps, realizing her own unique style and relishing it. This is an album to which you will return often for just such explorations. Very highly recommended.

A breath of fresh air in the Acoustic Rock scene
author: Dennis Halsey
Project Mercury are a breath of fresh air in the Acoustic Rock scene, creating a unique sound that I find difficulty comparing to other artists. They have a gift for capturing sentiment through the use of what may seem a simple story. This disc is definitely worth a listen.

Imagine a non-disastrous meeting between Queen and Aimee Mann
author: Will York
...a rare and surprisingly merger of Lilith Fair singer-songwriter sensitivity and elaborate, 1970's rock-inspired songwriting drama. Frontwoman Marian Mastrorilli's songwriting strikes a balance between directness and subtle complexity, while her vocals are both graceful and engaging. Imagine a non-disastrous meeting between Queen and Aimee Mann.
