This is the fifth album by PSYCHATRONE RHONEDAKK called "Disturbs The Air"....coming just one year after his collaboration with Cotton Casino(formerly with ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE)this CD finds Psychatrone experimenting more in sound!
This album features a totally acappella ,multi-tracked song("Can You Travel...?"),one track totally played on child's toys, and a few MOOG synth excursions. The whole album is a bit "darker" in feeling than his last release, while Mr. Rhonedakk certainly hopes that it is evident there is much hope in the mix here too.
Also note that MOOG synth is used exclusively on "Ground Zero Station"...psychatrone is so glad that he featured this classic keyboard on his new CD in retrospect now that Bob Moog has passed on(RIP).This track now can also be considered a tribute to the man who changed music with his imaginative inventions.
Three covers of other's songs are on this disc too...
"Can You Travel In The Dark Alone" was by single album psych-sters GANDALF who wrote one beautiful set of lyrics that here are stripped of their original arrangement so that they might make more of an impact on your mind. Mr. Sando, member of1960's group Gandalf and the song's composer, wrote to Psychatrone saying he enjoyed the version of his song included here. Mr. Rhonedakk was honored by his remark.
"They Moved The Moon" originally by Warren Zevon is here given a claustrophobic/space arrangement reflecting some of the feelings Mr. Rhonedakk had while hearing this song for the first time. Ahhh, the "bad old days"! This particular song was written about on Siltbreeze's "Siltblog" saying that it reminded them of Eno era Roxy Music. We were ,again, honored to be mentioned in that band's company!
Finally,"Earth Anthem" is given a novel "space broadcast" treatment....originally a TURTLES song,here it becomes a deep-space radio sign-off broadcast from earth.(Is this Psychatrone's "sign-off"?)
This is an album that takes the listener on a journey through the darkness...all aspects of darkness, inner and outer.
Not a "stoner rock" album ,but a collection of soundwaves to disturb the air in your personal space! This represents an "Inner-journey" for Psychatrone himself too.
The WIRE magazine (UK) said in their Oct. 2005 issue that,..."Rhonedakk treats us to a series of gothic synthesized instrumentals and songs that summon up a strange meeting between Antony(of the Johnsons fame)and electric organ grinder and former head of the Church of Satan, the late Anton Szandor LaVey." Mr.Pouncey also says that this is a "solo outing that displays the full extent of " Rhonedakk's "ideas and influences." Then he sums it up by saying that this CD is a "brew of esoteric musical nostalgia that Incredibly Strange Music fanatics will find enchanting"! We send our thanks to him for such kind words about this release.
The BROKEN FACE blog-site from SWEDEN said of this CD...."Nothing I've heard from this one-man ensemble before has been this accomplished and exciting all the way through." Then Mats at Broken Face goes on to say that if you "dig all sorts of far-reaching psychedelia then this is for you"! (The "Broken Face blog" is now where the editor of Broken Face magazine reviews his choice favorite music releases.)
George Parsons of DREAM MAGAZINE wrote...."Psychatrone Rhonedakk covers a lot of hallowed ground" here,"Kicking things off with " a "majestic instrumental....that regally strolls through Mayan temple hallways." Next the cover of "Can You Travel Through the Dark Alone...spectrally drones as it casts out eerie supernatural atmospheres into the ether.Ground Zero Station churns out low sci-fi frequencies that slowly swirl in lava lamp patterns before dissolving." That's just a bit of the review to be included with DREAM #6 ,the next issue of his fabulous magazine. Thanks Mr.Parsons!
The November 2005 online reviews on www.terrascope.co.uk(the Ptolemaic Terrascope's new on-line magazine)said "Opening with some sinister percussion and brooding distorted guitar, this is an atmospheric and haunting album that has an unsettling atmosphere broken only by the occasional light of a flickering candle.
Once the mood setting VIOLET RAY THEME has ended we are treated to a remarkable cover of CAN YOU TRAVEL IN THE DARK ALONE originally by Gandalf, and here turned into an electronic mass, underpinned with deep drones and a fragile vocal performance making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. From this point on the album pulls the listener into the underworld, the music moving through your head like shadows, sounding like Klaus Schulze being hypnotised by Aleister Crowley." They go on to write that the ,"...album plunges into the void with the eleven-minute electronic workout that is DISTURBED AIR MOLECULES ,the spirit of early Tangerine Dream presiding over the landscape, whilst Delia Derbyshire spins in her grave with the sheer joy of it all." Then the album finishes with EARTH ANTHEM that ,"...has vocals so distorted that the words are more like memories,as they compete with the high pitched electronics behind them, before they slowly soften into clarity and reveal the light within." Psychatrone sends his thanks to Simon Lewis for the beautiful review here, wow!
For what it's worth a friend of Psychatrone's also said that this CD gave him dreams of giant, black birds chasing him through fields at night! Hmmmm....
