ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"....This is indie noir with inventive rhythmical lustre and a haunting vocal style, understated but overwhelmingly cool...if you can imagine a meltdown between PJ Harvey (with a natural grace in place of psychosis), Queen Adreena (minus mania) and Portishead (without the cloak and dagger angst) you’re close to the little treehouse The Psychic Echo have constructed for themselves." - Mick Mercer (Music journalist)

We were previously called 'The Butterfly Effect'. We recently decided to change our name due to other bands using that title. We want to be original and have an original name for our group. After much consideration the name we came up with is 'The Psychic Echo'.

From Butterflies To Echoes :

We wanted something similar to 'The Butterfly Effect' - a term used to describe Chaos Theory, or how small actions can have much larger consequences, much like a butterfly fluttering its wings causing a hurricane on the other side of the world. We agree with this theory. we believe that every action does indeed have a consequence, and even the smallest act can have a huge impact on our lives, others and the world around us.

The butterfly effect is a creative metaphor for cause and effect. However, this metaphor deals purely with physical action. We wanted to express ourselves through a name which took this idea to a deeper, more personal and less tangible level.

We took the initial idea of the butterfly effect and allowed it to evolve from the physical, fluttering of wings, into the metaphysical, creative thoughts and ideas. Our new name 'The Psychic Echo' developed the ideas behind the butterfly effect and moved them into the realms of the metaphysical.

'The Psychic Echo' suggests how we can allow ourselves to look into the future to pre-empt and try to manipulate our future existence, much like the psychic may be able to predict the future. Our futures are determined by the choices we make. If we carefully consider the effects of our actions or inaction, our thoughts and ideas and the consequences, and are truly conscious of our actions, maybe it will help us to make the right decisions in life.

We believe that perception is everything. That positivity creates more positivity, as does negative thought creates more negative energy. Our name relates to the power of positive, creative and hopeful thoughts and ideas. These thoughts and ideas can have a ripple effect or echo in our lives and our futures. Our name 'The Psychic Echo' says all of this to us.

The Butterfly Logo :

We use the butterfly as a symbol, a visual image to represent our group, and our philosophy. The butterfly has links to our previous name and our present title as far as Chaos Theory is concerned, however, it also means much more to us than Chaos Theory alone.

In Greek mythology butterflies represent the human psyche, the mind and the soul. So, this is closely connected with Eva's lyrics, as much of what she writes is about mental and spiritual pain, love and loss.

The butterfly also demonstrates to us how beautiful life can be. Its short life span reminds us of our short time on this earth, and how precious life is. Their delicate wings reveal the fragility of life, reminding us of how fragile we are too, both physically and emotionally.

"Butterflies are like rainbows, only briefly touching our lives and then they are gone, but they instantly remind us of how wonderful, beautiful and precious life is. They are tiny and gentle. Precious and beautiful. Delicate and fragile. Fleeting colours, like flying jewels in the air. Touched by the sun. Like glimmers of hope in the darkness." - Eva Valentine.

EVA VALENTINE:
"During my life I have had many creative interests. These have included acting, contemporary dance, art & design etc. The one constant among all these interests has been and still is writing. I have been quietly keeping journals, writing poetry etc. for most of my adult life. Writing has helped me throughout my life to cope with life's trials, tribulations, heartaches and torments by releasing and expressing my innermost thoughts and emotions.

In recent years I have had the desire and opportunity to use some of my writing and poems in the creation of songs. I continue to write, be creative and my poems have evolved and now always take the form of songs.

It feels good to share my thoughts and feelings with others through music and at last make myself heard."
- Eva Valentine

DARKSTAR:
"Since an early age I have been playing, producing and creating music. Taking on influences from classical to industrial and enjoying the sense of musical alchemy that comes from experimentation. Having worked in the band setting for many years - The Psychic Echo acts as a change of direction in which the music comes from a more personal empathy that connects directly to Eva's lyrics. I see music as a way to communicate feelings and strengthen sentiments. Thoughts are organised into melodies and emotion is expressed through sound. Recording of our debut album - 'Into The Light' began in September 2006 and was completed in february 2008. We recorded 12 tracks."
- DarkStar

We are influenced by all that surrounds us. All we have seen and touched, and all that has touched us. All we have learnt and all we will learn. All that we know and all we have heard. All we have felt and still feel.

LYRIC'S - Inspired by Life and death. Love and hate. Love and desire. Love and loss. Loss and grief. Beauty and uglyness. Compassion and cruelty. Hope and despair. Joy and pain. Happiness and sadness. Positive and negative. The darkness and the light.

MUSIC - Although we do not want to sound like, or emulate other bands or artists, we are still somehow influenced by other singers and musicians. I suppose we cannot help but produce something similar to what we listen to, and are into. Although we'd rather not be put into a 'Genre Box', as we are into many styles/genres of music. Varying from Classical to Punk, Gothic to Metal, Electronica to Indie, Industrial to Ambient and Alternative to the Avant Garde. We aim to try to develop new ideas and experiment. Then hopefully come up with something a little different.

Romantic. sometimes dark & abrasive, seductive, grief stricken, hopeful, open & honest, personal, introspective, angry and sad.

A Journey into the Light
I came across with The Psychic Echo on Myspace. It would be hard to put the duo’s music into one music genre - fortunately this is not my job and I leave it on the critics - but this is why their music becomes more unique. According to them they play "Electronica / Trip Hop / Gothic", but one can also find some classical (Turn), experimental and oriental (The Butterfly Effect) or even metal (Dark Angel) elements. I could imagine their music in films as well. Since I myself like many different kind of music, I would recommend this band to those who are also open to different genres and likes to listen to music of a high standard. Their intense music and Eva's beautiful voice would be alone enough for listening. However, I would not be fair if I did not point out the importance of the lyrics. I always put emphasis first on the music and the voice, in this case it is especially true as I am not a native speaker of English, but here lyrics makes the music complete. As one can read on the duo's Myspace site about the lyrics' influences, the various contrasts of ideas and thoughts appear in their songs quite revealed. Even though both music and lyrics can be seen as sinister, dark and hopeless at the first sight, however, there is always light and hope in the end.

A group and album that brought an appreciation for this genre to me.
I want to start by saying that I'm a musician, owner of a recording and post production audio business, and a huge fan of many music genres. Previous to discovering The Phychic Echo, the general electronica/rock genre of music was actually not a favorite of mine. I had nothing against it, but at the same time I had never found a band that struck that "chord" with me personally. That changed when I came across The Phychic Echo. I was initially going to try and isolate a few of these talented musician's songs in this review, but I feel I would be doing an injustice to unmentioned songs by doing so. With that in mind, I'm going to review The Phychic Echo in broader terms as all of their music is great in my opinion.

I came across them on MySpace months before the release of their debut album. There was something about the combination of Eva's writing and Dark Star's music that truly drew my attention. One item that intrigued me was the deeper meaning behind their music. To fully appreciate The Psychic Echo, a listener should take the time to learn and understand the influences behind their music. In reading their bios and blogs, interviews, and communicating with them, one can see the emotional driving force behind their music. While each song is a pleasure to listen to in general, Eva's lyrics have powerful underlying messages that are not always apparent to the casual listener. Add to those lyrics Dark Star's ability to musically communicate those powerful messages and emotions through his extrordinary music writing talent, one ends up with a combination that takes the listener on a deeply satisfying musical journey. Powerful enough to even inspire my own musical writings in new directions that I had not envisioned before.

To be able to influence me enough to discover a new appreciation of a particualar musical genre speaks volumes in my opinion. I HIGHLY recommend The Psychic Echo to anyone who appreciates music on any level! I don't think you'll be disappointed in the least.
