Album Notes

PT's first solo recording is now available on CD. This classic harmonica project is still considered the benchmark for Bluegrass harmonica. It features performances by Jerry Douglas and Ricky Skaggs. The disc also contains two bonus cuts of the West Texas Music Company (Johnny Paychecks working band) at their best. This remastered classic should be a pleasant surprise to the many fans who have worn out their vinyl copies, as well as those discovering PT's music for the first time.

Born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin in 1953, PT discovered the harmonica at age 19 and quickly started to develop his own style of playing. His solo release in 1978, PT Gazell "Pace Yourself", continues to stand the test of time.

His innovative work with the West Texas Music Company, (Johnny Paycheck's working band) from 1977 to 1980 opened up new musical possibilities for PT. His ability as a soloist and an ensemble member of the band garnered him both critical and popular acclaim and made him one of the most sought after session players in the country.

After his successful stint with Paycheck, including three gold records, PT went on to play with a long list of artists including Jerry Douglas, Jessie Winchester, Mel McDaniel and many more...

FROM RANDY SINGER: Chromatic harmonica Jazz great.

PT was instrumental in my harmonica playing during the release of "Pace Yourself". I studied his solos and learned a lot about how to fit a harmonica into a musical pastiche besides just taking a solo. I owe him
a debt of gratitude.

I absolutely consider his seminal work of "Pace Yourself" to be a must have for any diatonic harmonica player.

"Fans of harmonica players know Gazell and find him technically way ahead of the pack on the little instrument, able to expressively articulate each note in a rapid passage with feeling as well as skill, inviting comparisons with jazz masters such as the tenor saxophonists Wayne Marsh or Sonny Rollins. A "best" can be passed out in terms of harmonica playing that surely means something. "Pace Yourself" is one of the best recordings highlighting the harmonica ever made, pure and simple. This includes performances in all genres that the harmonica has worked its way into — which with a bit of research is revealed to be just about everything including Indian raga".... Eugene Chadbourne

This disc contains virtuoso performances by three of the world's greatest and most accomplished musicians. It should be required listening for any aspiring musician in any format. You will not hear tighter ensemble playing anywhere. You will not hear pure, unadulterated joy or be more awed by the inventive, clean, pure, moving solos on this disc. There is not a single note out of place. There is not one musical corner that goes undiscovered. The music is out front, as it should be. There is no hiding behind gimmicks or technology. This is pure in every sense of the word. With this work, PT Gazell takes his rightful place among the world's finest and most inspiring musicians.
