" . . . a formidable lyricist with raw insights and great compassion." - (SOMA Magazine)
(Puckett broke up in the winter of 2002. They were based in New York City.)
Here's the story behind 'burned like wood':
When Matthew Puckett made his big-screen debut as the boy next door to the boy next door in the oedipal nightmare/black comedy 'Spanking the Monkey', fans of the movie were sure that they'd see him again. However, Matthew decided to leave the world of indie films behind to devote all of his energies to his band.
From his early childhood to his late teens, Matthew learned to play all the instruments necessary for rock n' roll. Mastering guitar, bass, drums and piano, Matthew became a one-man band. Avoiding sports and after-school activites, Matthew would head straight home to his four-track and his arsenal of instruments, losing himself in his songs.
While attending NYU, Matthew performed solo acoustic shows every week, hanging out at all the downtown 'open mic' nights. He joined a handful of bands and was soon hooked up with a revolving crowd of musicians. The line-up for his band was constantly changing and up until a few years ago there was a different lead guitarist every week.
Over time, Puckett compiled and perfected the material of 'burned like wood'. The CD was produced in part by James Mastro of Health and Happiness, and Bongos fame. James called on an old friend, Richard Lloyd of the legendary band Television, to grace a couple of tracks with his guitar. The CD was released with a celebratory concert at CB's Gallery and a joint live cybercast on former MTV VJ Adam Curry's Metaverse. After the release, Puckett was invited to South Dakota to headline along with Chuck Berry at the Concert to Benefit Wounded Knee Creek. The concert, a five-day festival, aimed at raising money for the native Lakota people.
The follow up to 'burned like wood' is entitled
Puckett-'23' and it's available here at CDBaby!

A wonderful and poetic album.

This album makes me feel like hanging out late with my best friends and makes me have a little more faith in the things I had forgotton to remember - love, home, family, being young and the open road. Matthew Puckett writes heartfelt lyrics and packages them in varied ways: sometimes sensuous & acoustic, sometimes gritty & visceral. "We aint got no wings but we can fly and we aint got no car but you ought to see me drive." From She's Babylon makes you want to meet whoever that song was written about and then press repeat on the CD player again and again. There is something liberating about listening to "Burned Like Wood."
