A delicate, complex rendering of the oud voice

The voice of Rahim Alhaj's instrument is accompanied only by his own, in introductory comments. His renderings drew me deeper and deeper into a meditation of a pure, spare beauty that is the voice of his country and his own heart. I have been to Iraq and these pieces evoke it, the rivers, the scent of the desert, the palms, the unbelievably handsome men and lovely women, the exuberant children. This music, in his hands, is a treasure.
