Rajeev Taranath is one of the world's leading exponents of the sarod, the lyrical and richly textured relative of the lute. Today he is one of the top ranking performers of North Indian classical instrumental music, this virtuoso performer displays musicianship characterized by brilliant technique, deep introspection and a highly disciplined approach to the development of a raga, or classical melody. Taranath, a distinguished disciple of Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, is the recipient of many honours and awards, including the Indian government's highest award in the arts in 1999, for outstanding achievement in the classical music field.
