Why use White Noise for Babies?

If you\'re a recent parent (like me!) then you\'ll know that at 3am there are times when a crying infant really has gone on long enough!

The CD for sale here has been created and produced by myself and, crucially, works. I\'m a University of Oxford science graduate and semi-professional musician with internationally selling work, so I\'m not going to waste time if things aren\'t effective at soothing a crying baby. The pure white noise recording is at 192KHz sampling quality and as such is comparable to anything you\'d expect from Top 40 Billboard and the like.

OK, so why is this one different from the millions of other pure white noise cd\'s out there?

For two main reasons:

Most CD\'s contain just pure white noise - this is rather more sophisticated than that. This CD of white noise to calm crying babies also has a multitude of randomly mixed ambient and womb tones, such as heartbeats, digestive noises, purple and brown noise, low bass tones etc. This means the noise not only masks external frequencies but creates a womb experience that is deeply comforting. These are very low in mix so the brain hears them indirectly and in a somewhat subliminal fashion. This soothes crying babies and infants very effectively.


Treatment of the samples and mixes using Low Frequency Oscillators adds a random dimension to the noises heard - essentially no two seconds of the CD are the same, which triggeres alpha wave brain patterns as the brain tries to make \'sense\' of this. It\'s a bit like the background noise from the cricket test match - we all know how easy it is to fall alleep to that and it\'s not because it\'s cricket! Simply put, the brain processing creates random patterns of electrical activity that trigger the stages that are a precursor to sleepful states. This CD will help adult sleep too - insomniacs take note!

How does it work?

Simple - put it in the CD player in the child\'s/crying baby\'s bedroom (or yours if using it to combat insomnia) and turn on, raising the volume to a level at which noises from outside the room become inaudible. This might seem quite loud if you\'re in an urban area, but it\'s the way to go - the womb is a noisy place to be. Then walk away. The CD is 72 minutes long which should be plenty as it\'s usually getting asleep that\'s the difficulty, this CD then gently fades out allowing natural sleep to occur without further external stimulus. Good for you, good for baby.
