Album Notes

The Sound of Christmas boasts a mix of jazz, orchestral, and traditional arrangements of popular Christmas carols, featuring the extraordinary trumpet sounds of Ralph Moore, backed by some of the nation’s most phenomenal musicians and producers.

This project opens with a riveting rendition of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” produced by Jeffrey Jones and Christopher Stevens, of Tye Tribbett’s band, Soundcheck. It also features the production talents of singer, song-writer and producer, Christopher Lewis and Perfecting Church’s own, Derrick Starks (who has traveled across the country and abroad as a bandmember/music director with Vanessa Bell Armstrong, the Clark Sisters, and the Whitfield Company choir), and others. The Sound of Christmas also includes one of Ralph Moore’s original compositions, “Everlasting Life”. This ballad, based on John 3:16-17, reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas, God’s gift to all mankind. The CD concludes with the traditional classics, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and “What Child Is This”, encouraging the worship of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

So unique. Ralph is the best live trumpet player I've ever heard. This album is perfect for the holidays, and most importantly, the spirit behind the music is genuine and worshipful.

Hearing a truly gifted artist interpret traditional Christmas songs in their own unique way is my favorite part of checking out holiday music. Here's a perfect example of a beautifully crafted spin on some old favorites, revealing an album that easily stands out from the pack. Using a varied jazz style that adjusts easily to the roots and feel of each song, the musicianship easily pivots between upbeat and laid back, wisely making the most of hymnal ballads while stepping up to flush out the funkier R&B numbers. The spotlight is on the trumpet throughout the proceedings, and once it slides in over the piano and percussion, there's no need to wonder why. The playing is spot on, using superb timing to move the tracks forward but not frustratingly dominate the overall sound. The songs are all traditional and instrumental, except for one original composition, "Everlasting Life," a smoothed out reminder of the meaning of the holidays, complete with delicate backing vocals that add yet another layer to the already warm, full sound that this album personifies.
